There were 42 years worth of demons, 42 years of mostly struggles, 42 years of waiting until next year. Not anymore. This, the 43rd year of the New Orleans Saints, will be different.
In one swing of Garrett Hartley's right leg Sunday night, the Saints kicked away their demons, booted out their past struggles and ended the wait.
The Saints are going to Super Bowl XLIV. Hartley's 40-yard winning field goal in overtime of the Saints' thrilling 31-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC championship game guaranteed them a spot.
"I just knew when it came off my foot it was going to split the bars, " said Hartley, the Saints' second-year kicker. "I just turned around and put my hands up in the air and hugged (holder Mark) Brunell. This team is headed to Miami now."

Yeah, it was all the ref’s fault. Whatever makes you feel better.

Last nights 2-pick, 1-fumble performance is Favre's way.
I'll keep Rogers thank you.
Indeed! I wonder if Favre was enjoying his view of the Superdome’s rafters.
Colts for me too. The NFL rarely has put up a game I want to watch in the last 10 years. This year should make for a fun Sunday.
I have no dog in this fight. I’m a Jets fan (who was disappointed by the outcome but not by the game).
You’re working hard to be a classless a$$hole who can’t understand that the rules in a game are supposed to be enforced fairly.
You are welcome to wallow in your celebration. Those of us with eyes and working brains will know that the Saints came out on top with help from the officials - and only with that help.
LOL, I just about choked on that one.
My how sour are the grapes this morning. LOL!
Suuuuure you don’t. Anytime someone’s favorite team loses it’s always the fault of the refs, the altitude, or George Bush. Wallow I will!

After winning the Superbowl in 1996 with Green Bay, which I will admit he played well, he has gone on to lose in the playoffs EVER since. He has as many interceptions as he does touchdown passes. That is his record.
Brett Farve(like most good quarterbacks) had two or three good years. After that he has choked in the playoffs every time. He always throws two or three passes in every game where he forces the ball , because of his arm strength, into double or triple coverage instead of throwing it away or taking a sack. He reminds me of Bledsoe.
The fact is that Greg Williams defensive strategy was perfect. They hit Favre every time he dropped back to pass. New Orleans defense controlled the outcome of that
game.
FYI, I am not a Saints fan. I grew up a Bills fan and I am now a Pats fan.
You err. He has achieved his goal. lol
As a Saints fan, it was great to see the D on the field.
They made some stupid mistakes though as they usually do.
Best I seen them play was against your Pats.
Look how Skins almost beat the Saints because of D.
Good Luck next year.
No sour grapes here. Anyone looking at the numbers from last nights game if they didn't know the final score, would conclude that the Vikings demolished the Saints. They had twice the yardage...they beat them on the ground and in the air and they totally controlled time of possession. Too bad they couldn't control the ball.
The Saints are going to have to be a whole lot more productive 2 weeks from now if they hope to beat the Colts. Peyton won't give the game away like Favre did last night.
The reason the Vikes got there was a TEAM effort. The Vikes had a running game and a good defense this year.
Favre was only a part of the team.
While I will be rooting for Peyton and the Colts, I know how good a football the Saints are...
Congratulations Saints on making your first Superbowl. Let the sore losers grumble and complain... you earned it.
I stand (well, sit) corrected, FRiend!
I'm not bashing the Saints but anyone who knows anything about Football agrees with me here. The Saints were outplayed last night and if they don't bring their game up about 3 notches they don't stand a chance against The Colts.
I’m ecstatic!! GEAUX SAINTS!
Didn’t the Vikings make the playoffs last year without Favre?
He's a tough sumbitch. I'm the same as he is and I'm on fairly decent shape. I recently took a hard tumble (without being hit by a 270 lb man) and I know how much farther away and harder the ground is now than when I was younger. Kudos to Farve, but I just gotta say - WHO DAT!
Good luck in the big game.
Defense ALWAYS wins championships. Take that from a former Bills fan.
