There were 42 years worth of demons, 42 years of mostly struggles, 42 years of waiting until next year. Not anymore. This, the 43rd year of the New Orleans Saints, will be different.
In one swing of Garrett Hartley's right leg Sunday night, the Saints kicked away their demons, booted out their past struggles and ended the wait.
The Saints are going to Super Bowl XLIV. Hartley's 40-yard winning field goal in overtime of the Saints' thrilling 31-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC championship game guaranteed them a spot.
"I just knew when it came off my foot it was going to split the bars, " said Hartley, the Saints' second-year kicker. "I just turned around and put my hands up in the air and hugged (holder Mark) Brunell. This team is headed to Miami now."

Did Favre ‘throw’ the game???
The first Superbowl loss to the Giants hurt alot more.
The Dallas losses were not as bad for me because I had the Cowboys in a pool that won me $650.
The truth be told, I am not a football expert or much a fan (although I must root for my local team, whatever the sport is), but I’m under the impression that Favre has seen better days.
Glad to see the Saints make it to the Super Bowl for the first time. Correct me if I’m wrong but are the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans the only two current NFL teams never to make it to the Super Bowl? I can see the Texans not making it because they are relatively new but the Lions? That’s pathetic! The Lions won the NFL Championship game back in the 50s but have never made it to the Super Bowl in nearly five decades of having the game. That’s sad!
The New Orleans Saints. Your Katrina money spent on a bunch of thugs. Enjoy your victory.
I was thinking yesterday, is it worse to be a Lions fan or a Vikings fan. The Vikings build their fans hopes up time after time, only to have their hearts ripped out in the end, while we Lions fans never get our hopes up, so we’re never disappointed, and dwell on our losses.
Heck we’re still trying to find a replacement at QB for Bobby Layne, after 50 years.
At least you won.
I had to endure the game with an old GF who was a cheerleader at SMU. It was painful.
Would have enjoyed a an alcohol and razor blade bath over that game.
GAAAA! Don’t ‘ Who Dat’ me! I can’t stand football . I just want it all to be over. I just don’t understand the mania attached to a game. Doesn’t do a thing for me, sorry.
I’d like to subject everyone to 24hr-3 month- ice-skating, pre and post event, and discussion of the skaters thoughts and eating habits in return.
I would have won a lot more money at that game, if only Leon Lett not been such an idiot and let Don Beebe catch him.
I know he was just a backup, but I am happy for Brunell, he was a great QB who almost single-handedly got Jacksonville to the Super Bowl way back.
What a classic memory.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Lett also involved in Miami winning in Dallas on the Thanksgiving Snow Day?
That is also a Classic.
Brian Cox was sliding around in the snow after the game.
I’m not what you would call a football fan either, and please don’t quiz me on the sport’s rules and strategies, because I can’t tell a first from a down. But, the Saints happen to be our “local boys” and I just have to root for them as I would for the home team in any sport.
I do have to admit, though, that devotion to sports can border on the obsessive. People may not know who the Vice President of the United States is, but they can write you a Ph.D.-worthy dissertation on the past week’s football developments.
You are correct, except for one minor detail. It wasn't snow, it was sleet. Billions of little icy ball-bearings on the playing field, bouncing off helmets and down into uniforms.
I’m at work, but barely.
Are there even enough people left in Detroit for the Lions to have fans?
On a late-night talk show, your comment might have generated much laughter, followed by applause.
Minnesota 28
Revenge for minnysotan's electing alfranken.
If alfranken is your senator you shouldn't even be allowed to have an NFL team.
Unbelievable the Saints are going to the Superbowl.... I never thought I’d see it.....
Geaux Saints!!!
