The fleur-de-lis or lily flower or perhaps iris folower (Iris pseudacorus) is a symbol used by royalty, it actually has very little resemblance to the lily. It exactly what is really is, whether a flower or a cross, or a trident or other, it certainly passed from Frankish to French Kings. It is a symbol that has also been associated with the Virgin Mary, the lily being associated with Mary, and with Saints.
In the time of Joan of Arc, the Chamber of Accounts in France permitted the family to change their surname of du Lys on January 20th, 1430.
This symbol has long been associated with a yellow or golden flag, not of surrender, but of Catholic Pope or Christian religion. Long before Joan of Arc, Charlemagne and his troops invaded Spain in 778 AD to defeat the Muslim Emir, however though there was some successes, as his army was returning to France over the Pyrenees they were attacked from behind by Basques who killed many of Charlemagnes men. The statue of Roland on the Chartres Cathedral 1230 AD shows Roland of the great epic that in part captures some of these historical events and the fight of Europe against invading Islam, we find Roland holding his shield and upon it is the fleur-de-lis.
The symbol is used as the logo for the Boys Scouts of America.
Republican Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law on July 9, 2008, making the fleur-de-lis the official symbol of the State of Louisiana.
On January 24th, 2010, the New Orleans Saints NFL football team won the NFC Championship.
You know, the Islamic radicals use all sorts of symbolism and tales to foretell the future. So let me do a little prophecy of my own. I foretell that the victory of the New Orleans Saints in their NFC Championship for this year portends victory over the Islamic radicals and all barbarians (Vikings) in general. I should also like to tell Senator Al Franken, D-Minnesota, that the rise of the Saints foretold the fall of Air America.
Go tell Osama, the Saints are coming to town.
Congratulations to the beloved New Orleans Saints.
Congrats to the Saints. It will be a great Super Bowl.
Fleur de lis, those Saints sure are marching tonight!
I beg to differ ...
In Hoc Signo Vinces
Merci beaucoup!!
LOVE that image! Thanks for posting!
Best helmet in the NFL.
Nope, the Cowboys Star is the best logo in any sport.
This was very well written Brian. You have a talent.
Be careful or the ACLU will jump on this as another “offensive” display of religion.
