It would be funny if they try the global cooling thing again because, just as you suggest, I'll be arguing that the only patriotic thing to do is to get rid of the electric cars and we'll all need to get V8 SUV's and leave them idling in the driveway.
Since the economy is entering a repeat of the 1970s..., the EcoNuts will just dust off their "Sky Is Fallin'" mantra of those days and will return to their dire warning about "Global Cooling"! Actually, their new cry is "Climate Change" so whatever happens..., they are covered!
No, leftists still want to ban them because they induce size envy. They also want to ban others from having larger TVs, larger houses, larger families, larger pets, larger cosmetic surgery enhancements, etc. Leftism is mostly about size issues.

How about 1 day's worth of oxygen for every tenth of a degree that man has caused Earth's temperature to rise over the last 100 years?.
I think they have to move away from the atmosphere and temperature for the next scare. Its been done too many times in a row now.
A clean water shortage could work and has some great tax and scam opportunities.
Personally, I would like the next global scare to be about a magnetic pole shift caused by cars and airplanes traveling east and west. The only way to travel in a metal container that wont cause a pole shift is along longitudinal lines.
The beauty of this scam is that it preserves all the same bad guys (Americans) and victims (poor Africans) as global warming. Algore can sell east-west magnetic credits and the government can create huge east west taxes and place gps chips in cars to monitor travel. Rich people can still fly to Africa and demand that the poor Africans not be allowed to own cars and remain in poverty while feeling good about themselves for saving the planet. Hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanoes can all be blamed on magnetic disturbances caused by SUVs driven along route 80 by Cristian fundamentalists.
There needs to be trillions of dollars in research before we can know the full extent of the latest global pole shift threat and how taxes can be used to stop it.
No matter what the crisis, we already know the solution will be socialism.
