Just a few months ago my old computer reached the point where duct tape wouldn't help. My plan of having multiple drives didn't work, 2 out of 3 blew out with the rest of the package.
My new computer came with Vista which started showing signs of instability almost right away.
I heard Rush talking about Carbonite backup and signed up for the plan.
Last Thursday my OS really started going bonkers, nothing I tried would help. System restore would not work at all. Late Saturday I ran a reformat and recovery and got back on line. I only reinstalled the basics and turned on the Carbonite restore function. It's slow, the download is still running, but I have a lot of Tiff and large jpg files, a lot more than most folks have. All my stuff is coming back. My documents folder came in early this morning, lots of stuff I don't want to lose.
I don't usually do testamonials but Carbonite does exactly what they promise.
Thanks for the information, I have been thinking about what backup service to use.
Very interesting. Thanks for the info.
Microsoft should GIVE all Vista users a free upgrade to Win7. Windows Vista is garbage!
Even behind a firewall, this isn't a good practice, especially if you are running Windows/IE.
I don't know, SWAMPSNIPER, if duct tape won't fix it, then...
...out she goes!
I’d be happy if I could run XP again.
I’ve been using Windows7 for over a year on three computers and I think it’s the best OS ever.
Last I checked, subscription to Carbonite was $55 / year.
A 250 GB external USB drive will run about $120
An Iomega home media network 1Tb NAS storage drive about $250
Both are FAR faster to restore than the Carbonite service.
I didn’t have an infection the damned thing just wasn’t stable. It seems better now, time will tell.
I am behind a firewall. I have an outbound proxy server, and run anti-virus, anti-spyware, local firewall and registry cleaner on a regular basis. My work machine is linux and my home machine vista.
Then again, I’m in the computer security business and a tad paranoid. But I have never had a serious virus and only some minor spyware.
I have a Verbatim that is backing up my Dell Laptop and Desktop. If I want to switch to Apple will my backups work to effect the transfers?
On site storage is very fast, but in the event of a catastrophe (like, say a house fire), off site storage would preserve things that are genuinely irreplaceable.
Before I landed my current job a year ago I worked in a computer repair shop (small shop—great experience). We had more than one person come in who had only relied on external USB drives for backup of family pictures. They had a catastrophe and lost everything.
Add an off-site service (say JungleDisk) where you only pay by the actual GBs used and you have the best of both world.s.
Do you do a lot of photography in RAW format and save files in TIFF? I can use up more storage space in an afternoon of shooting than the average person imagines.
Ask Carbonite.
We do not surf the porn sites or any other questionable content sites. I am an electronic tech by trade and I do believe the anti virus software actually draws the bad junk to your computer.
I have an XP disc I’ll lend to you. The computer place that built mine gave it to me. Much faster and more reliable the vista or micro 7 IMHO.
Rush endorses Carbonite; that’s good enough for me.
Meanwhile, your story is just appalling. Go Mac. Seriously.
