The number isn't “unprecedented” either. Laura Bush had about 20 staff members also.
There are more important issues than the First Lady and the pomp and frivolous concerns of that ceremonial office. They are trying to socialize medicine and your worried about someone making 36,000 a year in D.C.? I don't even know how they live on that and manage to get within spitting distance of the White House.

You’re not kidding. I had a job offer out of college as a sales representative for a printing and graphics company that did/does a lot of fedgov business, offices on K Street. In the mid-late 80’s, a starting base salary of 33k plus commission didn’t sound bad at all to this NC boy.
Flew up and interviewed at their expense. Everything was great, they made an offer. Then I started researching the cost of living. I’d have been poor, even then. So, I declined the offer.

Here are the salaries of 15 for Laura Bush. Hillary had about 20 staff also. Some positions are sort of “both” and it depends on how you want to count them; but “unprecedented” this is not.
And I wonder why they want to keep this out there, what possible purpose does it serve to obsess about such a meaningless nonentity as the First Lady?
