Well, here it is, the final game of the 2009 college football season. For much of the bowl season, I've had to work, get my car fixed, and Google search any insignificant question and computer problem my grandparents call me about. (You would think with their age and guile they'd have the answers to various things readily available. You would think). So needless to say, this has kept me from my assigned college football commenting duties. For that I apologize, but tonight I will get the festivities going. So without further ado...
The BCS National Championship Game: Alabama vs. Texas (8:00 pm) From the moment this matchup was set, I've been pondering what the key to this game should be and ultimately what it will be. Could it be the Longhorn offensive line having a chance to contain the legendary Mt. Cody? How about the Tide secondary and what they'll have to do to contain Jordan Shipley? And let us not forget the mystery of chessboxing that could occur between Nick Saban and Mack Brown. But I keep hearing that the Tide are going to make mince meat of the Horns, and that kind of ignores recent history. What did we learn from the last time we saw Texas in a title game? We should have learned not to count them out, right? So keep this in mind before we coronate a team in a game like this. In my usual neutral third party kind of observational style though, that doesn't necessarily mean that the Tide aren't every bit as good as advertised. I happen to think so, for whatever that's truly worth.
You’ve been great Raider! How you keep your cool when we all start acting like kindergartners, I’ll never know. You have been a gentleman and made this a lot of fun!
The hit was with the helmet, so it was like catching a bowling ball with steel bars on it in the shoulder blade at about twenty miles an hour.
I got to photograph the Horns this year. Here's Colt:
Some of the hardest hits don't look that bad from the stands, but down close they're pretty wicked. This is Oklahoma whacking the Baylor QB.
What can I say GOP_Raider? You do a great job on these threads. I enjoy them every time. Thank you so much!
Having Blair stop by the threads helps. ;)
Great photos RK. Thanks for posting.
Great photos
Maybe my husband should stop by this thread - he keeps me smiling too.
While Texas was a pretty fair team overall, they had the weakness of depending on one man, Colt McCoy. Once he was out, it was all over but the crying. Colt is a great young man and the #1 Guarterback in the country. But he’s not much use sitting on the sidelines injured. Hopefully, they’ll learn from this and develop one or two seasoned back ups in the future. (Considering his lack of experience, I thought Gilbert did about as well as could be expected under the circumstances.) He’ll be a good one in the future for the Longhorns. Also Colt’s little Brother, Case, will be at UT next year. He just quarterbacked his HS team to the Texas State Championship in their Division.
Colt played 5 downs.
My thought exactly. I do not know the history of Texas QB's this season, but barring a fluke of injuries or transfers, one has to blame the coach for not having anything better than an inexperienced freshman as a back up.
Also considering a 6-0 start, which may have just as easily been 10-0 or even 14-0, you have to think Texas just did not have what it takes to win.
That Bama/Auburn thing goes both ways. Now give it up for The Tide - National Champions.
Roll Tide....this was a looooooong game.. but we won....I just stood in line at Academy Sports for over an hour to get my tshirt and cap.....we won and life is good...my Yankees won the WS and my beloved Tide wond the National Championship!
Long live BEVO! ....
Thank you for all the college football threads! I read them every week and look forward to reading more throughout the year. This was a great game (despite what the radio pundits said after the game), and I’m happy Bama ended up on top! Roll Tide!!!!!!! I’m sorry that Colt McCoy’s college career ended the way it did tonight, and I wish him the very best! He’s my favorite college QB. Also, I look for great things from Mr. Gilbert for the next 3 years.
Roll Tide Roll!
Boise gets a share of the championship in my book. Bama may very well be able to kick their butts but they won’t get the chance. Congrats to them both.
Boise will likely be ranked second. I could envision them putting Florida second though.
When I saw that interception at the end of the half, the backup QB tossed aside like a rag doll by the interceptor, I though that was it. I’m impressed Texas was able to battle back within 3 before Bama put the nail in. I was calling the Texas backup QB Curtis Painter. I owe him an apology since he threw 2 touchdowns.
GOP_Raider, will miss you, but you have truly EARNED your rest! Many THANKS for your EXCELLENT COLLEGE FOOTBALL THREADS! See you again in September!
Congrats...
I pulled for Bama for the same reasons. Mostly for the SEC.
Jevan Snead decided to go pro. At first I was upset.
Then I decided if he is going to be inconsistent then
let him do it somewhere other than Ole Miss.
For me it’s Florida and Tennessee. I can handle an occasional loss to Auburn because it’s family, but I HATE Florida and Tennessee!
