Gentlemen,
May I present my newest acquisition. A genuine "service grade" M1 Garand.
I told everyone that this was a "Christmas gift from my uncle" which, in a way it was. I ordered this from the CMP the first week in December. I expected it around February but it showed up Christmas Eve. How's that for a government agency?
Take another look at this bad boy.
All I wanted was a shooter but this gun is beautiful. The stock is a little off but a little Tung oil will fix that right up. I am posting this for a reason. The word is that this is one of a bunch recently returned to the US from the Greek Air Force that were hardly every used and after looking at this one I believe it.
It's a postwar Springfield produced 1955-57. What a deal. $595 plus $22.96 shipping and even in California FedEx drops it off at your front door. I had been thinking about getting one of the since the late 70's and am I glad I waited until now to pull the trigger (heh). If you're a Vet you're pretty much good to go on getting one of these. If you've been thinking about getting one the time will never be better. Go to a gun show and see what these go for. You know you want one. Don't put it off any longer. They also have the Greek HXP 30-06 coming in the January. This is your chance. Go for it!
bump for later
Have a safe, prosperous, and Happy New Year my friend.
Best,
L
Beware of factory 30-06 loads; I've heard that they have a different pressure curve from ball ammo and over time they can mess up your operating rod.
Very nice.
Now hand rub it with boiled linseed oil.
After rubbing it down with 00 steel wool.
Get rid of any oil soaked rags and enjoy that M1 Garand
I am ready to place my order!
Not at all. The have an Online Order Form that you can fill in from your browser and print.
You will need to be a member of an "Affiliated Club." You can find one here. If you live in California I recommend the California Rifle and Pistol Association or the Garand Collectors Association.
Fill out and sign pages 1, 2 and 3. Scan your birth certificate or passport and print out.
Scan the top page of your DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and print out.
Scan your club membership card and print out.
Take the whole package down to a UPS store and have it notarized. In most places the Notary will fill out the bottom of page 2 but in some states, like California, they will you give another page to add. Mail the whole package to the CMP and that's it.
If you are not a veteran there are other ways to fulfill the marksmanship requirement. If you are over 60 years of age none is required If you have taken a hunter safety course just scan the certificate. If you have a CCW that counts just scan and print it. If you don't have any of those, there are many other ways to qualify- pretty much any live fire training. Look at their site for help.
And if you bought one from the DCM back in the day when you could only get one rifle one time. They now let you get something like one a month. How bout that?
Is it possible to just march into one of the CMP stores and pick out a rifle off the rack?
What credentials / bona fides do they expect these days?
My Friend: May your great-grandson shoot this rifle..many years of good memories and may She always be shouldered during peacetime..and aimed during wartime.
I wonder if the two freepers I pinged remember how cheap Garands were when we were kids in the 60s?...as low as 50 bucks in the back of Men's mags like Argosy and Sports Afield......you could mail order anything but classIII then..M-1 Carbines they almost gave away...and old .303s and stuff....man..guns outside of Weatherby and Purdy or H&H were pretty cheap..then came black guns and inflation
Beautiful finish
Very nice. I guess even BO could get one!
Looks pretty good for a service grade.
Makes a great Christmas present.
(hint, hint)
It's a true "clip fed" weapon as opposed to a "magazine fed" one.
L
It used an "en-bloc" clip that holds 8 rounds. They give you one with the rifle and they can be found just about anywhere for around a buck a pop. They are reusable. You push it down with your thumb and if you're not careful the bolt can close and give you "Garand thumb" which is what all those thumb comments are about.
After the last round is fired the clip ejects with a unique PING!
You pop it in and on the last shot fired it pops out.
Dang, yes I do!
