I remember seeing his first stuff come out -- on Blue Note records, IIRC -- in 1985 or 1986. Damn. Hate thinking about that. I used to have about a foot or two of Blue Note vinyl, including some of the premium French pressings. Sold 'em all over the years for rent money. Shoulda clung to 'em under a highway overpass instead. :)

Neither Time nor that blog saw fit to mention Wes Montgomery. I wouldn't trade any two of his notes or phrases for the whole damn pack between those two, and I like a lot of the players on the lists. (For that matter, neither list picked Mike Bloomfield or Charlie Christian, either.)

Malmsteen is a bore. He know every scale and ever mode in every key and can play it a million miles an hour..Problem he says nothing in his playing. Neat trick but it gets real boring real fast.
What you said. Techincally a master---but no soul.
Which you can say, unfortunately, about too many musicians on too many instruments, never mind the guitar shredders.

Ok, I will.....
"Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, Then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.
Well the first thing you know ol Jed's a millionaire, Kinfolk said "Jed move away from there" Said "Californy is the place you ought to be" So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.
Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars."

While Sal is thinking about more muzak, try this one.
Not sure about your taste, but I really like the solo rip that starts at about :38. He gets into it again at the end of the video.

Great post! I couldn't agree more - he is all of those things.
I have been playing guitar most of my life. I can do the two-handed Van Halen tapping (like "Eruption") and the fretting of chords and tapping the harmonics 12 frets higher (Van Halen's "Women In Love') Those who aren't musicians are impressed; I thank God every day for my musical gift.
Then I see Stanley Jordan. I want to bow and say "I'm not worthy" every time I see him. I'm not jealous or envious. I'm in awe!

Rik Emmitt. There's a guy who can tear it up! I've seen Triumph in concert many times - you always got your money's worth.
Rik can finger-pick like Chet Atkins (check out "Fingertalkin" from the "Progressions of Power" record) and can tear up the fretboard as well as Van Halen or Yngwie (the solo in "Hold On" is just one example). Not only that, his songs are very positive: "Hold On", "Fight The Good Fight", "Somebody's Out There'. Mea culpa - I can't believe I overlooked Rik Emmitt!
