I need some book suggestions. (vanity)

Posted on 12/22/2009 8:41:50 AM PST by dawn53

Looking for books for a present. My husband enjoys non-fiction books. He reads the conservative author's books, but really enjoys books more along the line of historical non-fiction, etc. Recent books he's enjoyed: The Real George Washington, The 500 Year Leap, Killing Pablo, and the book about Sheriff Arpaio (Toughest Sheriff...or something like that.) I'm heading out to buy some last minute presents, and thought I'd buy a couple books...any suggestions of books in that genre?

Well, if he liked the real GW, he might like an excellent RevWar book: “Angel in the Whirlwind” by Benson Bobrick. Available in paperback. A real page-turner...

There’s a new biography of Curtis LeMay out titles “LeMay” and “A firey peace in a cold war” a bio of Gen. Bernard Schreiver who made the ICBM possible. Fascinating looks at the US strategic forces during the beginnings of the cold war.

Beyond the Band of Brothers by Dick Winters

The war memoir written by the one and only Capt. Winters. One of the very best books about the ETO that I have ever read

“The Making of a Fighter Pilot” by Coram. The last portion of the book would be of interest to Freepers. It details how the subject of the book, John Boyd, developed the Shock and Awe form of warfare. Cheney thought highly of his strategies.

Also, the new MI5 book sounds pretty interesting, though I can’t say I’ve read it yet.

Ambrose Undaunted Courage Who would ever think one wouldn't want a book about the Lewis and Clark Expedition to end?

Fremantle Three Months in the Southern States First hand account of a British soldier, who transited the Confederacy in 1863, which will never be assigned to kids in government schools.

Adams When in the Course of Human Events Everything you learned about the War Between the States in High School isn't everything there is to know.

Rand Atlas Shrugged Fiction but we're living it now.

Uris The Haj Also fiction, but not really. The story of the Arabs as Jews move into Palestine.

The Reagan Diaries No comment necessary.

I doubt if it would make it to you by Christmas, but I suggest my historical novel. Don’t ever order from the website, I have a special for freepers.

Get him the Civil War Trilogy:

Gods and Generals
Killer Angels
The Last Full Measure

Written by Jeff Shaara and son Michael. In my opinion, the best writings on the Civil War, ever. And I mean no disrespect to Shelby Foote and Ken Burns.

White Feather...

We were Soldiers Once...and Young.

And here's a book...that I re-read a few weeks ago...that made me raise my eyebrows more than once...."The Aquitaine Progression"..by Robert Ludlum. Talk about some creepy parallels with our current world....

Sorry, I missed the historical part of the request.

Try: “The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition” by Caroline Alexander. Riveting.

Also, “The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland” by Jim Defede.
