The nominations for the 67th annual Golden Globes were announced on Tuesday morning (December 15), bringing recognition to both newcomers and long-established Hollywood talents. "Up in the Air" received six total nods, followed by "Nine" with five and "Avatar" and "Inglourious Basterds" with four each. In the Motion Picture - Drama category, James Cameron's "Avatar" and Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air" will face off against Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker" and "Precious," a harrowing film about familial abuse. The Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical category sees "The Hangover" competing with period musical "Nine," the romantic comedies "(500) Days of Summer" and "It's Complicated," and the culinary-obsessed "Julie & Julia."

"Up in the Air" notched five other nominations: actor in a drama (George Clooney), supporting actress (Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick), director (Jason Reitman) and screenplay (Reitman). Best Series - Comedy or Musical will see "Glee" and "30 Rock" compete against "Entourage," "Modern Family" and "The Office." In addition to top show, "Glee" received nominations for best comedy/musical actress (Lea Michele), actor (Matthew Morrison) and supporting actress (Jane Lynch).

In the film categories, Emily Blunt ("The Young Victoria"), Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side"), Helen Mirren ("The Last Station"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") were honored for Best Actress - Drama. For Best Actor - Drama, Clooney is up against Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart"), Colin Firth ("A Single Man"), Morgan Freeman ("Invictus") and Tobey Maguire ("Brothers").

For Best Actor - Comedy or Musical, Day-Lewis competes with Michael Stuhlbarg ("Serious Man"), Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("[500] Days of Summer"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Sherlock Holmes") and Matt Damon ("The Informant!"). Best Actress - Comedy or Musical contenders are Cotillard, Bullock ("The Proposal"), Julia Roberts ("Duplicity"), and Meryl Streep twice ("Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated"). The Best Director category recognizes Reitman, Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow, Cameron and Clint Eastwood ("Invictus").

On TV, the Best Actress - Drama category includes Glenn Close ("Damages"), January Jones ("Mad Men"), Julianna Margulies ("The Good Wife"), Anna Paquin ("True Blood") and Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"). Best Actor - Drama will be a face-off between Simon Baker ("The Mentalist"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"), Hugh Laurie ("House") and Bill Paxton ("Big Love").

Best Actor - Comedy or Musical nominees are Morrison, Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), Steve Carell ("The Office"), David Duchovny ("Californication") and Thomas Jane ("Hung").

The Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, January 17, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

NPR’s Comments on this year’s Golden Globe Nominations :

Movie Nominations

In what’s rapidly becoming a trend, Up In The Air did very well — it’s nominated for Best Drama, George Clooney is nominated, supporting actresses Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick are both nominated, the director Jason Reitman is nominated, and his screenplay is nominated.

Invictus, meanwhile, pulled off the perplexing feat of not being nominated at the Best Drama level, but having its director and actors (Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman) nominated.

Perhaps the closest thing to a surprise — and it’s not really surprising so much as noteworthy — in the big movie categories is that James Cameron’s Avatar is nominated for Best Drama. This hasn’t been a major player in the awards that have been handed out thus far by various circles of critics, but it’s important to keep in mind that the Globes love this kind of big, popular, ambitious audience bait.

As many expected, Meryl Streep was double-nominated in the same category — actress in a comedy/musical — for her roles in It’s Complicated and Julie & Julia. As formidable as Streep is, this does seem like it’s also a symptom of what a weak year it was in good roles for women, particularly in comedies. (See also: the fact that her category includes Julia Roberts in Duplicity, certainly a likable movie but nothing that would be awards material in a better year, and Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, which: likewise.)

Other double nominees include Bullock (also nominated for The Blind Side over in drama) and Matt Damon (for Invictus and The Informant!).

One of the films people are watching closely this year to see if there’s any chance it could sneak into some awards recognition is The Hangover — note that it was nominated for Best Comedy/Musical, but that’s the only recognition it received. Compare that to the comedy It’s Complicated, for instance, which not only received Streep’s nomination but one for the Nancy Meyers screenplay. Meyers, also the writer of films like The Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give as well as the updates of Father Of The Bride and The Parent Trap, doesn’t exactly have an extensive history of award-winning; the fact that she got the only nomination given to a comedy screenplay seems ... well, as stated earlier, the Globes can be a bit perplexing. (Full disclosure: Haven’t seen It’s Complicated yet; just going by expectations versus reality.)

The only movies/shows from the list I have seen are House and The Hangover. Hangover was hilarious. House is great. Wouldn’t mind seeing Inglorious Basterds.

I agree. But I have to admit that I love the music. I don't watch the show ( the plot is sooo contrived), I just listen to the music on YOUTUBE.

Forgive me for stifling a yawn.

None of these movies interest me...or for that matter, the players. I can't understand what the fascination with George Clooney is about, for example. He's no actor; he's just a face.

Thank goodness for DVD players and Turner Classic Movies. I seldom go to the theater anymore. Why pay $12 or whatever it is now for the privilege of sitting next to crying babies or people who can't stop talking, when you can watch a good movie in the privacy and quiet of your own home?

Interesting.

I have not seen or heard anything on these lists and with the exception of Avatar (maybe for a buck at the moviebox) not planning on it either.

The entire list (with the exception of Avatar maybe for a buck at the moviebox) sounds like torture.

Inglorious Bastards has one of the best pieces of cinematography I have seen in years...

It's near the end, and takes place in a cinema - then a face appears in a cloud of smoke.

I do not want to write more for fear of giving away any plot, but it was breathtaking to see.

This film will win many awards, and will deserve them, too.

Also, if you can discipline yourself to wait 6 months, these films are usually available in your local public library. For instance, the much hyped DARK KNIGHT ( where the late Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor Oscars ) is now available in my library. Last year's Oscar winner --- SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is also available in my library. I've seen BOTH -- 6 months later ( without paying a cent -- come to think of it, I already paid whether I watch them or not, through my property taxes ).

I don't have a library near me, but you're right. Friend of mine gets many of her DVDs from her local library...and good stuff too.

When I want to buy one, I go to this discount store in the city. It sells mostly CDs and cassettes, but once in a while, a good film turns up on either VHS or DVD. Most o these are used, but because the store is diligent in making sure the video, CD or DVID are in good working order, you never have to worry about the quality. And there have been times when I've bought some good films for less than a buck. Can't beat it.

The interesting question to ask is this -- WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE FILM INDUSTRY IF ENOUGH PEOPLE DID WHAT WE'RE DOING ?

Can you imagine what would happen to Disney for instance if millions of consumers just waited till their DVD's came out in their local libraries ??

The ones I think who are really going to suffer will be the movie theaters. Already, with modern technology, you can download some movies. My guess is that with less business, coupled with outrageous prices to obtain the movies, theaters will disappear.
