BANGOR, Maine Author Stephen King and his wife are donating money so 150 soldiers from the Maine Army National Guard can come home for the holidays.
King and his wife, Tabitha, who live in Bangor, are paying $13,000 toward the cost of two bus trips so that members of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit can travel from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Maine for Christmas. The soldiers left Maine last week for training at Camp Atterbury. They are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan in January

“Its $13,000 he could have kept in his pocket.
“Credit where credit is due.”
OK, I gave $360 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals this year. I dare say that that is a higher percentage of my income than is the percentage of income given by Mr. King.
I’ll await your congratulations.
He is a typical left wing wacko I agree his book sales must have been hurt after that comment about the military
I read 3 of his books and that was enough gore etc etc
I couldn’t take anymore
I posted this a couple of years ago:
I have read just about everything Stephen King has written. He can write a very good story. However, in his books, Christians and gun owners are (as far as I remember) always nuts. There is never a simply normal Christian person. There are also never any normal gun owners. If the person owns a gun, they usually own an arsenal and are nutcase skinhead survivalists. He has always been a big Dem supporter.
But you do have to give him credit for this.
Looks like he’s chosen to have the Christmas spirit,
much as he’s an anti-war lib. I’m sure those who benefit
from this gift will be thrilled and grateful, and that’s
who’s MOST important. God bless and protect our troops.
I was a big Clive Barker fan back in the day, until I read the books of blood series and noticed Barker had a thing for naked little girls. Then he came out of the closet a bit later and well that was pretty much it for me. No more of him. Plenty of other great writers that don’t involve shoving that stuff into my face every time I want a good horror novel.
Maybe King has not forgotte the face of his father,
But the phrases “tax write off,” and “liberal statement,” do hover in the foreground of this generosity.
God bless our troops.
IMHO, Stephen King peaked with “The Stand.” It was all downhill from there. I enjoyed his earlier works.
Congratulations! Seriously.
Any act of charity is commendable. Some more commendable than others, of course, but the fact is, you don’t have to give. So if you do, well done. You could have kept it in your pocket.
I enjoyed his gunslinger series but the last book was disappointing in its ending.
King needs to visit Iraq and Afghanistan so he will know first hand what our soldiers are doing.
Maybe there is a novel in it.
Who wants to bet that the funds are going to be taxable for the soldiers who get to come home.
Is the IRS on this?
My favorite King book/novella, whatever, brought to cinema was “The Mist”. Of course it had the obligitory crazy Christian lady. I don’t think he can write a story without slamming Christianity somehow, and let’s not forget, the Mist was brought on by the military.
A few other of his, the military is the bad guy as well.
Now that I think of it, forget him.
How did you like the pro-life, conservative sociopaths? I thought they were brilliantly written, especially the fat, greasy woman in the "baby-factory" t-shirt who claimed (according to the author's intrusion) to have given birth to a dozen children.
Sorry, I found the bile offset the entertainment value.
Strangely enough, this thread caused me to think of you for some reason.
I recall a certain widow who gave two coins which constituted the whole of her wealth. The King of kings and Lord of lords praised her action and declared her sacrifice from her poverty would be known thoughout all ages.
You must admit, that's one hell of a standard to measure oneself against...
I agree.
The MIST’ is anti-military, but the director of the movie knew inside that the novel painted the military in a dark way.
The movie changed the ending from the novel and King agreed. Same thing with the THE NATURAL. The novel is a sick, twisted version of King Arthur, belive it or not. Thank God, the director had some sense the change the movie.
