As a keeper of exotic pets, I'm always amazed that people call my animals dangerous when the common domestic pets are responsible for so many more deaths, have so many more instincts that make them dangerous to people, and have more "weapons" as part of their bodies. Tragedy is a part of life, and an intelligent society realizes that government cannot outlaw tragedy. Should this incident cause us to pass more laws against owning dogs or owning specific breeds of dogs? No, I've known people who had great rottweilers that never harmed anyone. With any dog, there is some danger of doing something that triggers an instinct. I suspect that this was the situation in this case. Obviously, bigger dogs are a much greater risk than smaller dogs, but do we want the government drawing that line? The animal rights freaks are currently attacking exotic pets, but if we allow the "dangerous" argument to empower them, they'll come after the dogs eventually.

“As a keeper of exotic pets, I’m always amazed that people call my animals dangerous when the common domestic pets are responsible for so many more deaths...”
I’d guess that there are a hell of a lot more “common domestic pets” around than exotics.
The rest of your post is sound.

Sweet Jesus...
I saw first hand the results of a pitt bull attack when I was young, only this time it was on a small horse. The dog had to be clubbed off the pony’s leg then beat continuously until it retreated. These animals are unlike a domestic canine. TRUST ME!
Screw proper training. Just too much risk!

Everyone that has a large breed dog as a family pet needs to be extremely careful with them around small children until the dog gets ued to having them around. After that it is still a good idea to never completely trust the dog to be alone with the chid. Dogs, like many people, can change in heartbeat.

Why with dogs does the breed matter so much ... but with people we are told breed is irrelevant?

Rottweilers aren’t “pitt bulls”.

I am a hunter not a sportsman....the difference of course, is a hunter hunts for a reason, while a sportsman kills just for the sport.
In the case of Rots and Pits, however I make an exception. I will shoot no stray dog (in fact, I take them in), however with Pits and Rots, I consider myself doing a service to practice my aim.
Yes, there are a few good Rots and Pits, but to deny that the breed as a whole can be a killer, is to deny the whole premise of dog breeding.
We have dogs that are good at retrieving, tracking, etc.....those breeds were breed for fighting....and they do it well... those dogs should not be pets.

After that it is still a good idea to never completely trust the dog to be alone with the chid. Or to trust the child alone with the dog... too many kids are allowed to behave like wild animals.

If a person doesn't keep their animals under complete
control 24/7, they are bad owners and worse neighbors.

I would never be comfortable around a dog after I cut its tail, ears and balls off.
