How Did Tiger Keep His Secrets?
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 13, 2009 | Robin Abcarian

One of the world's most scrutinized professional athletes, with a pristine image, has been keeping infidelity under wraps. Many wonder how he pulled it off.

As the carefully constructed public image of Tiger Woods continued its excruciating free fall last week, one question perplexed those who think there should have been hints of trouble: How was it possible for Woods, among the world's most scrutinized professional athletes, to keep his infidelity secret for so long?

Just about everyone is at a loss: the golf writers who banter with Woods (when he allows it), golf fanatics who can tell you which way his golf ball's Nike logo was facing when Woods chipped it into the 16th hole in the final round of the 2005 Masters, paparazzi whose paid informants can sniff out a straying spouse a mile away.

How was Woods, 33, able to maintain a pristine image as a loving husband, father and son that was apparently at raging odds with his private life?

Some say Woods' famously controlling nature allowed him to philander unsuspected. (On Friday he admitted publicly that he had cheated on his wife.) Some wonder whether intimidated golf reporters never pressed Woods because they did not want to risk losing the little access they had to the sport's premier practitioner. Some believe that fellow players, had they suspected, would have kept mum because of Woods' beneficial effect on TV ratings, their earnings and public interest in golf.

Others think the singular nature of professional golf itself made it possible for Woods to create a nearly impenetrable zone of privacy -- or secrecy.

Lonestar, I totally agree with you. She doesn't seem like a gold digger or someone willing to accept sharing her husband. She wasn't like the hookers and bimbos. He pursued her and if I remember reading right she was very offended by him sending someone else to see if she would meet him. He is a low life sicko that married her because that was the only way he could have her and immediately starting screwing around.

He went to the most secluded place in America.

Somewhere where no one would ever see him.

Somewhere that if they saw it they wouldn't believe it.

I posted this on another thread, but it applies here.

All of his friends should now be suspect also. How could they not have known what was going on? Were they involved in any way? Their wives will demand answers and keep a closer watch on their husband's activities.

Tiger has been able to get away with this sleazy behavior because many people will excuse anything if they feel that they somehow benefit from that person's overall success. The same sorts of scandals happen everyday on college campuses (mainly football and basketball players raping and assaulting other students). Yet every game day, the boosters are out there in force cheering on their team, and if someone got beat up raped well that's too bad. So and so is a great ball player and the victim probably deserved what happened to them! The celebrity worship of many American's is disgusting.

Tiger was supposed to be different. He wasn't from the ghetto. His parents raised his "right". He went to Stanford! Well, he is the same as most of the other high profile athletes that American's worship. Scum.

How did Tiger learn to work the system? Well he had a few mentor's of course. MJ & CB and many others I'm sure.

When is it OK to not mind your own business?

I bet his wife knew all along. She just didn’t want to face the truth.

I got a feeling that there was a "big warning" phone call and her reaction was to "how many???"

I think Shaq lives in the community....wonder where he was that night.

Exactly, this is just like the treatment given Dear Leader — not that their activities are the same but it’s the same dynamic — protection by the media itself — and the handlers and PGA in the nasty Woods case.

I find it all sickening and am glad he will be gone from the tour for a few months. He is an embarrassment and huge disappointment to those who did view him as a role model.

I was not among them but my intense dislike was from his behaviors on the courses he played in tourneys; had nothing to do with his so-called private life. To me, he is a total loser all the way around.

Tiger was sleeping with a bunch of whores...A few more weeks and a few more “story bucks” for the girls...and he’ll get a receipt “Paid in Full”.

I agree with you both. He certainly had the means to keep this on the down low. Why should she suspect anything when he probably laid it on so thick out of guilt that it caused her to remain head-over-heels in love and thought he was too. They were really still newly-weds anyway, 5 yrs. married. I can’t imagine the shock she had and is still having. Apparently, Woods is expert at compartmentaling his life.

The hater finds much satisfaction in seeing some form of misfortune come to another person.

Yeah right. It's the 'hater's' fault that Tiger is a low life. It's the 'racist's' fault that Tiger was running around on his wife with porn actresses and prostitutes.

This is not misfortune. This is just desserts brought about by bad behavior.

“Enablers. His wife had to have known something..”
“You don’t think her reaction indicates that she knew nothing about the “girls?”

I think she is surprised, hurt and through with him. I think she probably feels like a fool for trusting his hype.”

I think that about sums it up.

But I also think that right now there might be a lot of uneasy famous golfers hoping no one looks at them too closely.
