Texas field goal likely puts Boise State in BCS

Breathe easy, Boise State fans.

Texas hit a do-or-die field goal on the final play of the game Saturday night to beat Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.

The kick likely put Texas in the national championship game and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. If Nebraska had won, the Broncos might have gotten snubbed by the Bowl Championship Series.

I still think that horsecollar call was crap. Replay showed the jersey was caught, not the pads. But that kick sealed it, you’re right.

A more important controversy—was it more painful watching those last less-than-2 minutes knowing the outcome after that kick out of bounds, or listening to 60 minutes of Musburger?

Who would pay to see these teams in an 8 team playoff... I know I would:

1st round:
Alabama 13-0 vs. Ohio State 10-2
Cinncinati 12-0 vs. Boise State 13-0
TCU 12-0 vs. Florida 12-1
Texas 13-0 vs. Oregon 10-2

Listening to 60 minutes of Musburger was agonizing.

They really don’t like Texas, and they can’t disguise it.

What about that crazy penalty assessment of 15 yards from the 19 to put Texas on the 4 yard line, from where they barely scored a TD? That’s not right, is it? The Nebraska coach didn’t think so.

>> 1st round:
>>Alabama 13-0 vs. Ohio State 10-2
>>Cinncinati 12-0 vs. Boise State 13-0
>>TCU 12-0 vs. Florida 12-1
>>Texas 13-0 vs. Oregon 10-2

Those are interesting choices and they’d make a great first round. I’d pay to see it!

My picks would be Alabama, Cinncinati, TOSS-UP, and Texas.

I was, like every sane fan without a dog in the hunt, rooting for BCS turmoil—nothing against the Longhorns, but geez, WTF are TCU and Cincy doing anywhere near the BCS championship? I wanted one of them to be embarrassed by Alabama so badly! Point is, I will give the anti-Texas bent a pass on that account. But Musburger is still a horse apple.

“I am still in disbelief that Nebraska screwed off the final kick off like that. That is what lost the game. Not anything else.”

BTTT on that.

If you’ll reseed to put Cincy and TCU against Texas and Alabama (those two belong 7 & 8 seeds in my book), I’ll think about it. 8)

Some years the BCS system works great. In 2005, did anyone think Texas and SoCal weren’t the two best teams in the country?

This year, with Texas, Alabama, Cincinnati, Boise State and TCU all undefeated, a playoff would be a great thing. By the way, the SEC and the Big 12 already do their parts. They have championship games.

ALL college football fans agree on that.

If I wasn’t a Texas alum, I’dve been right there with you. :-)

How Suh can not be one of the finalists in the Heisman is ridiculous.I sure find games that have defensive abilities shine over the TD's every minute games better to watch. I was worn out watching how hard the "D" for NU played. Nothing better than college football.

I think the Huskers’ defense tonight was the best I’ve seen against a top ranked team this year, and obviously the best that Texas has played this year.

They held the Longhorns to only 202 yards of offense! Suh will be a first round draft pick by some lucky NFL team. The guy is incredible. Texas has a fine offensive line, but they were unable to handle Suh and that’s why the Longhorns were anemic on offense.

Little-mentioned by the talking heads on ESPN afterward is the fact that the Longhorns’ defense held Nebraska to only 106 yards, 5 first downs and 4 field goals!!!!

It was a defense battle for both teams. Seems everyone wants to rate teams with powerful offenses more highly. An often repeated mantra in the NFL is that defense wins championships. The same applies to the top NCAA teams.

I agree 100%, and I would ten times rather see a team that gives an opposing QB hell than a team that passes or runs right back. Of course, I grew up in the southeast, and I suppose if I grew up in WAC country, my mindset might be different. But I still think great D wins over a great O every time. And that Nebraska D won that game, on the board or not. They controlled the whole night.

I still think that horsecollar call was crap. Replay showed the jersey was caught, not the pads.

Initially, it looked to me as if part of the pads were grabbed but even if it was pure jersey, I'd need to check the rulebook to make sure that grabbing any part of the neck opening, front, back, or side constitutes a horse collar.

I say this because in the case of a facemask, the rule is that grabbing any opening in the helmet is a facemask penalty; finger in the earhole, under the chin strap or back of the helmet.

Nebraska offensive is pathetic. Their QB is a 3rd teamer on most top 25 teams. Once they settle the offense they will be a top 10 team.

Nebraska dropped more passes than Letterman made on his twenty-odd years of interns. Their receivers absolutely stunk, and it preempted any possibility of an offense to stop! Not that they tried anything but running left or middle more than once or twice. Nonetheless, I don’t think Texas’ defense tonight looked bad...they just looked incredibly weak compared to Nebraska’s.
