Alex P. Keaton's TV mom on "Family Ties" is gay.
That's what actress Meredith Baxter told this week's People magazine.
"I'm a lesbian mom," Baxter, who played Elyse Keaton on the popular 1980s sitcom, told the magazine. "I feel like I'm being honest for the first time."
Baxter, 62, said she started dating women several years ago, but before that, being gay "had never crossed my mind."
Baxter said three failed marriages led to several difficult years in her life.
"I was never comfortable with myself," she said. "That doesn't mean I was questioning."
The actress says she is in a long-term relatioship with contractor Nancy Locke, and that her five kids all know, and support her.

Whoa!!!!
nah, I’m not buying the idea that you can simply wake up one day in your late 50’s and turn 180 degrees on this.
(and to think at one time her biggest controversy was her TV marriage to a Jewish boy...)
My Mom is 66 and doesn’t anything like that. In fact, she has not wrinkles and smooth skin.
My problem is:
I like hips, lips and ....
and besides they smell good.
TRANSLATION: “It is not my fault the marriages failed.”
“Not my fault, born with failed marriage.”
I thought Michael Gross was cute, but as it turns out he’s just as liberal in real life.
I’ve always liked Meredith but I could have gone all day without knowing she was gay.
It’s just a cool thing to do with the Hollywood set.
Let’s see she was married to men and divorced three times. She picked poorly, likely hollywood types or at clubs lol.
Try picking a guy at church or at your local book club.
Sure, after all of these years you’re a lesbian lmao.
Scuttlebutt (trusted) has it that David was actually the high-strung, difficult half of the set.
I don’t mean to sound conceited or anything, but I’ll be 62 next April, and I don’t look anything like she does. In fact, most people tell me that I look like I’m in my 40’s. However, I don’t smoke, drink, or sit out in the sun all day.
>> TV marriage to a Jewish boy
Whereas in real life, Meredith has some Jewish ancestors, and David does not.
He is a product of Dartmouth.
They have twins.
Their series “Bridget Loves Bernie” was loosely based on an old hit play, “Abie’s Irish Rose.”
Meredith’s mother appeared as “Mrs. B” in the TV show “Hazel.”
These tidbits brought to you courtesy of the resident human almanac here at 668, who was just in here looking over my shoulder, and who knows all and everybody. :)
Yes, she is just another of a large number of examples proving that humans CHOOSE who or what to be attracted to.
Three failed marriages shows that she was able to find males attractive, and to love them.
Akin to Joan Rivers' saying "If you haven't got anything nice to say about someone, let's talk."
No .. she loves Bernice now.
Tanning bed: n. 1. A place to make leather.
it is a behavior.
so now that she does not want to accept blame for men not liking her or why her marriages failed, she finds an excuse.
Perhaps this is like that woman with elen degenerate who switched sides once she found a man who would suit her.
So she dabbled the last two years, found someone who convinced her it is not “her fault” and she bought it rather than improve herself as a person.
That’s why my sisters and my mother are leatherfaced and I am not.
And to think a constant theme was “You are too pale, you need to go to a tanning bed.” She who laughs last is LMAO!
Uh . . . congratulations.
