It might not be the smartest way of giving a zero-weeks notice at work, but you've gotta give this guy some credit for doing extra work and making a custom Mac OS X app just for the purpose of quitting.
Supposedly the pop up prompt (which apparently doesn't do anything) was seen by the fellow's coworker who explained the situation:
He believed he was in a temp-to-hire position, and after three months of extra hours and butt-kissing, turns out it's just a temp position. He was a good worker too. I'd have recommended him. Too bad he burned his bridges... Obviously he had contemplated quitting long enough to make this thing, but still refused to speak to anyone about his feelings. Ironically, he complained about the 'divas' at his last job.
Well, who'd want to keep him if he makes an app with prompts that don't even have functional buttons? If nothing else, one of the buttons should've opened an email app with a pre-written apology note. [Method Shop via Cult of Mac]
Good for him! How many workers know they are being taken advantage of or lied to. The company knows they can squeeze you dry because you want to prove yourself for a permanent position. Functional keys? That wasn’t his point - he got his message across just fine. And I do believe, he paved the way for the next temp employee to be treated fairly. Because he didn’t play the game like the majority do - I give him an A+. May it be a teachable moment for THE COMPANY!
Indeed. Contract work SUCKS because you invariablly get some little weasel of a boss who wants you to wear knee pads while chasing that carrot on a stick of a permanent position.
Haven’t we ALL wanted to do this? Yeah, it lacked a little something in grace and dignity, but it was funny and courageous. Sometimes the situation just calls for some barbed wit.
NOTICE!!!???!!! for quitting a job???? the only notice i ever gave was when they noticed me wheeling my tools out the door....
How much notice does a company give when they plan on firing anyone. They know it before hand and do it ‘on the spot’ when it’s convenient for them.
I’m saying this because I recently heard of a lady who left for vacation on Friday and Saturday received a phone message she was fired. They could even wait until she returned - they had to spoil her well earned vacation. Nor the courtesy of telling her before hand that she could have cancelled her costly family vacation.
The whole ‘notice’ thing is BS, IMO. RIF’d at two companies in the past 10 years, I’ve come to believe that I owe them the same as they provided to me...nothing. I understand the economy was tanking. And, I understand the business was troubled. BUT, the talking heads in charge NEVER even made an attempt to communicate with the mid management staff (my group), or anyone else. It was absolute BS, in both instances. For all the preaching from HR about ‘quit us the right way’ or ‘leave on good terms’, they have no compunction about just cutting folks loose, with no notice, nothing.
Daddy always said, “What’s sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.” Sound advice, I do believe.
That is a great way to quit, I like it... short and to the point....:O) GG
Nothing tops the story of the worker who showed up at work in a clown costume the day he was to be laid off. When he got called in to get his pink slip, the HR people couldn’t stop laughing.
