Is there any FReeper Math whizzes that can help us?

Posted on 11/16/2009 5:57:35 PM PST by netmilsmom

Okay, we have tons of algebra programs that can work with numbers but do not have any help with Story problems.

Can anyone tell us the formula for solving this, step by step.

Nine pounds of Sweet Potatoes cost the same as Six pounds of Apples. One pound of Sweet Potatoes cost twice as much as one pound of Onions. While a pound of Apples costs 24 cents more than a pound of Onions.

(we can't solve it with NO integers)

Can anyone tell us how to do this?

9SP=6A
1SP=2O
A=O+0.24

Three equations and three unknowns. should be a cinch for ya from here.

You have an integer...24 cents of difference.

Either do sobstitution or use the gauss jordan elimenation.

I am on a cell phone typing on a tiny key board so I’m not doing it for you.

Onions cost 12 cents a pound.

Apples cost 36 cents a pound.

Sweet Potatoes cost 24 cents a pound.

Six pounds of Apples cost $2.16.
Nine pounds of Sweet Potatoes cost $2.16.

A pound of Sweet Potatoes costs 24 cents a pound which is twice the price of Onions per pound.

Apples cost 36 cents a pound which is 24 cents a pound more than a pound of onions.

What are you trying to find, the cost of a pound of Apples?

I don’t think you have stated the complete problem here.

Nine pounds of Sweet Potatoes cost the same as Six pounds of Apples. One pound of Sweet Potatoes cost twice as much as one pound of Onions. While a pound of Apples costs 24 cents more than a pound of Onions.

9P = 6A

1P = 2O

A = O + .24

So,

1P = 2A - .48

1P = 2(9/6)P -.48

2P = .48

P = .24

A = .36

O = .12

x=cost of 1 lb. onions
2x=cost of 1 lb. sweet potatoes
x + $0.24 =cost of 1 lb apples
9(2x)=6(x + $0.24)
18x=6x + $1.44
12x = $1.44
x =$0.12 cost of 1 lb. onions
2x =$0.24 cost of 1 lb. sweet potatoes
x + $0.24 = $0.36 cost of 1 lb apples

9p = 6a (Nine lbs of sweet potatoes = cost of 6 lbs. apples).

1p = 2n (1 lbs. SP's = cost of 2 lbs. onions)

1a = 1n + 24 (price of apples is 24 cents higher per pound than that of onions)

In the first equation, replace the '6a' with something that's the same as '6a' - namely 6 times (1n + 24) from tthe third equation. That gives us 9p = 6n + 144.

Now replace that 9p with something equal to 9p... namely 18n, which we can deduce from the second equation. Therefore, 18n = 6n + 144, or 12n = 144, or n = 12 (the cost of onions is 12 cents a pound.

Given that, the rest should be a matter of replacing values.

Your missing the rest of the problem. What is it asking you to solve?

So far you’ve told us that:

9s = 6a
2s = o

Then the problem begins by asking A = .24 + something. What is the rest of the something it’s asking for? You can’t solve what hasn’t been asked.

9SP=6A
1SP=2O
A=O+0.24

9SP=6(O+.24)
9SP=6O+1.44
9(2O)=6O+1.44
18O=6O+1.44
12O=1.44
O=.12

Did I go wrong somewhere?

Step 1: identify variables
S is cost of pound of Sweet Potatoes
A is the cost of pound of Apples
N is the cost of pound of Onions (avoid using O - confusing with zero)

Step 2: translate sentences into equations based on same cost
9*S = 6*A
1*S = 2*N
A=24 + N

Step 3: substitute to eliminate one variable
(I don’t like Sweet Potatoes, so substitute two onions)

18*N = 6*A
A=24+N

Step 4: substitute to eliminate another variable
(get rid of apples next)

18*N = 6* (24+N)

Step 5: solve for N

18*N = 144+6*N
(18-6)*N = 144
12*N = 144
N=12 Onions cost 12 cents

Step 6: Compute the other variables
A = 24+ N A= 24+12 A=36 Apples cost 36 cents
S = 2*N S=2*12 S=24 Sweet Potatoes cost 24 cents

You forgot the Cap and Trade Tax and Healthcare holdbacks. Apples cost $6.50 except for people who don’t earn money. For them, the Taxpayers pay $12.50 a pound, since we have to pay the community organizers and make up for the taxes democrats don’t pay.

9s = 6a
2s = 1o
1a = 1o + $.24 or, 1a - $.24 = 1o

Then, 2s = 1o = 1a - $.24 or, 1s = 1/2a - $.12
Therefore 9s = 9(1/2a - $.12) = 4.5a - $1.08
Thus substituting 9s in the first equation with 4.5a - $1.08, we get 4.5a - $1.08 = 6a

Solve for a.
