Anyone remember Operation Eagle Claw - Hint: Iranian Hostage Crisis Rescue attempt (vanity)
Me | 11-13-2009 | Danae

Posted on 11/13/2009 7:05:26 AM PST by Danae

Ok, I got up this morning and got one of the biggest shocks of my life. I checked my School work, and I am taking a History class right now from a professor that I have been angling to get for about 6 months at American Military University. He has a Bio that is amazing, a real Military hero and a serious scholar as well. Anyway, I had a short essay topic that I did regarding the Middle East Iran Iraq and touched on the Hostage crisis, and the rescue attempt that failed to rescue the hostages. It was sort of personal to me because it was the first time I can remember being aware of something Political, and international. I was abotu 10 at the time. My dad was SOOOO pissed off at the government for setting up this mission impossible, and even madder that 8 guys died doing it, he felt they had been let down my their leadership etc.

So my professor asked me to research deeper into Operation Eagle Claw, and what happened operationally, which I did. This morning he gets back to me (As I had said that it was a really interesting question, it really was a pivotal event for me in that it woke me up to the world and reality in a lot of ways)and says this.

The reason I asked you to research the operation is because I was there.

WOW

I am taking a History class from a real live "Balls of Steel" hero. Talk about HUMBLED.... man.... and I called the operation an abject failure! ROFL... Which it was, but not because of they guys who were there doing the job, but because the Leadership that put them there didn't plan it to succeed! It really was mission impossible I think, and my 30 year old memories of the event say the same. How could those guys have possibly succeeded at flying right into Tehran and snatching the Hostages......AMAZING, and here is one of the guys who was there.

I had an A in the class.... LOL HAD being the operative word lol And if I loose it, it will be 100% worth it to have had the chance to sincerely thank a real live American Hero! I am seriously just totally floored this morning.

Wrong about what? I simply quoted Kyle and he quoted the pilot, those aren’t my words, my interest is in why the mission failed not whether that one pilot was right when he felt that his chopper was ready for duty, I’ll let you guys argue that, but when someone asks why the raid on Tehran failed, I will say what the Special Operations Community says.
Out of eight helicopters the Commanders on the ground were only delivered six and were only offered five, the greatest raid ever undertaken was killed before it could leave the parking lot.

Then Kyle doesn’t know what he is talking about and you are stupid enough to pass it along as the gospel truth.

I bet you don’t even know the maximum number of troops carried in a CH-53 was.

The Marine pilot felt his ship could fly and wanted to continue and no, I have a total lack of interest in aircraft, to me they were just transportation, I wouldn’t know the difference between that helicopter and the some of the ones I used to parachute and repel out of but my brother was on the old Sea Stallions as a crew chief when he was ASW.

My interest is in the reason the mission failed, that is what people ask, When someone asks why the raid on Tehran failed, I will say what the Special Operations Community says.

The mission failed because the Spec Ops types quit rather than see it through, then they tried to blame the Marines for everything they could and pretty much did get away with.

The fact that you know nothing about these aircraft and yet are perfectly willing to repeat erroneous statements as facts marks you as the pissboy for the spec ops crowd, coupled with a blatant disregard for finding out the truth about these aircraft when challenged on the statement you posted here makes you a sycophant as well.

In served under Major Seifert, was promoted by him, flew with SSgt. Dewey Johnson and trained Cpl.George Holmes and will not put up with you spreading stuff you heard second or third hand as fact.

Like my fellow Marine “Race Bannon” I knew those involved and served with them and I have more than an intimate relationship with the type of aircraft used, and Kyle’s theories just don’t wash.

For whatever reasons, the mission did not have the six helicopters it needed and that is what people learn when they ask why the mission failed to even get started, the helicopter assets never got to Desert 1.

LOL, you mean you will not put up with someone posting quotes from the Commander of Desert 1 taken directly from his book, that is funny. Well, many improvements have been made since those days.

Wow, turned out to be quite a thread.

I remember news/reading about that mission.

Do you also know of a mission in ‘79, also Iran, put together by Ross Perot? Two of his EDS employees were taken hostage and he hired Col Bull Simons to put together the rescue mission. Perot didn’t stay behind either.

Notice how Ansel keeps changing his story, and here he actually repeats what I have been saying all along: The Marines wanted to keep flying, yet in his very first post, he insisted the Marines DIDN’T want to fly on to Desert Two to Tehran.

Ansel, go home. I was part of the mission and all you do is repeat books.

the spec ops guys chickened out and blamed the Marines.

One RH-53 is capable of carrying at least 60 troops easily they had 5, do the math.

Race you just don’t comprehend well, I said that one pilot of helo 2 felt his chopper could perform but his flight leader said no and we lost the mission, usmcobra would not have flown it either he says. The pilot of helo 6 seems to have made a mistake with his BIM abort by following Marine policy instead of navy policy and the pilot of helo 5 just went back with the pleading of his more aggressive co-pilot in his ears pleading to continue to Desert 1.

The Tehran raid failed because it did not have the minimum helicopters delivered to Desert 1.

So your contention is that everyone just cancelled the mission at Desert 1 because they were actually afraid and just didn’t want to actually raid the embassy at all because they had chickened out, so they were just lying about five helicopters not being enough to perform the mission and went home.

This thread is just too childish and high school, this is just incredible stuff.

Yea, I do remember that one. They freed 1200 prisoners as well didn’t they? Bull Simmons died a few months after that. He is the one who ran the POW Rescue attempt in Viet Nam, Son Tay or something like that.

Why, thank you! I think I'll add it to my 'get' list. It's way past time for a re-read (especially with the current admin).

You are a complete moron

you started your attacks by claiming that the Marine pilots refused to continue, and then claimed your superior knowlege by stating what I had been saying all along: The Marines insisted on going

You are a total loser

Like a child you continue with name calling and personal insults, the one pilot that I described and brought up wanted to continue but his flight leader shot him down didn’t he?

Of the other two helicopter pilots of the three choppers that dropped out, which one kept flying or did one land his chopper because of the BIM alert and the other turn back?

The real problem here is that the necessary helicopters were not available and the rescue mission had to be abandoned.

This is one of my favorites:

I didn’t know that any Americans did not like our incredible Special Operations community"

Next to nothing in the knowledge department about the Marine Corps, but looooooves to talk trash. I've been watching it for a couple years.

I've watched ansel12 pull this crap too many times. I believe it was particularly insulting on Haditha/Hamdania threads.
