Good morning to all of you gardeners. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ida made land fall in Alabama went quickly degraded moving slowly northeast up through and Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia causing considerable flooding along its path. There are many Freeper gardeners this event may have affected. I know the two Freepers, Gardengirl and Gabz who started the original Gardening thread, live in the coastal areas of N.C. and Va. and I hope y’all are safe and well.

The indexing/archiving of this past year’s posts is still on going. Please let me know if there was a particular post that you found helpful or just interested you.

Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

I am glad to see someone still enjoying their gardens. I usually have a productive garden right through October but heavy drenching rains did it in prematurely.

I am going to try growing lettuce and spinach in indoor containers while we are buried under snow all winter...might even try a tomato plant or two in the kitchen. I brought my hot pepper plants inside, and they are still producing. One is so big I am using for an attractive floor plant in my living room.

Top Ten! :)

Gabz is OK. ‘Puter problems, but she’s been through these types of storms before. She’ll button up her house tight and ride it out.

I finally used a few of my habernaro peppers to make an orange juice habanero infused basting sauce and marinade. I made a big batch and froze some in ice cube trays and zip-lock bags. I used some the marinade on chicken breasts last night. Sure made a wonderful citrus chicken and rice dish with a nice slow build up of heat and not over hot. Tasty!

I froze some of my jalapeno fresh and oven roasted a huge bunch and then froze. More good stuff!

Headed to the garden later today to assess the storm damage. It was not near as bad as the Sept-Oct event we had here. I wrecked my car in that one, sniff.

We should have radishes, mustard, lettuce and maybe spinach today. Probably will need to fertilize again as those rains just wash our little raised beds.

Tomorrow the community gardeners are planting fruit trees all around our garden so we can share some fruit in season in a few years. At least, what the birds and bugs don’t get.

That sounds pretty good...I’ll pass that on to my wife, who is always looking for something to do with hot peppers. We had jerk chicken on the grill last week...marinated the chicken overnight in a jerk sauce made with chocolate habaneros.

Bell peppers are producing like crazy now. I had some caterpillars almost kill my broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

My various pepper plants were the only plants to survive all the rain we had in early Oct. They were the last thing I finally cleared out. I bet they wouls still be producing but I did need to get the garden cleaned up for winter.

Around here it’s time to break out the snow tires and snow shovels.

We had a rare 2-3 inch snow fall last year lasted on the ground a few hours.

We had one light snowfall already this year.

Not so rare, unfortunately.

Although, so far so good. It’s not unusual for us to have significant amounts of snow in Nov, enough to open the ski resorts about Thanksgiving time.

I consider it a good year if a white Christmas is welcome instead of *Not snow again.....*.

I usually clean my garden when the tomato plants die out. I left two bell peppers and planted a few more. We have a great fall pepper crop every year.

Most of my radishes, turnips, and lettuce will have to be replanted. We had over 15” during Oct & Nov and they drowned.

Well around here most of the trees are now naked, and the leaves have been collected once. But the wind has brought in some of my neighbors leaves so I still have more to collect.

There has not been enough heat and sun to dry out my garden to pull up the dead vegetation and those eternal weeds are starting new growth. I figure I will allow what weed seeds that can germinate until they get frozen will be that many fewer to deal with next year. Every time I hear a neighbors lawn mower humming I know they are broadcasting to my garden a new weed planting.

I have started inside my new ‘play house’ (6x8 greenhouse) some cucumbers that are just now starting to show signs of blossoms, and transplanted 8 Romaine lettuce plants into pots that are now about 6 inches tall. I had some of those hanging tomato planters that I brought inside that had been on the deck that had not died and am attempting to see if they will produce more tomatoes. One is showing signs it will produce. I am taking a very small paint brush to pollinate the blossoms myself. We shall see.

The posts about making wine from frozen juice concentrate may turn out to be the winners, but I’m still waiting for the first batch to be sure.

I'll try that next year - a couple in containers to stretch out the season. Did you start them in containers, or dig them up at the end of outdoor-season and transplant them?

You can bet those posts will be in the there! Maybe Diana and Gabz will give us a little more info about how they do their wine making. I think they gave us enough info in the number of posts they made but one or two posts with all the info in one place would help.

How did you do yours?
