Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow are to play husband and wife in a new film about the world's first post-operative transsexual.
Kidman will play Einar Wegener, the Danish artist who was born a man and married illustrator Gerda Gottlieb in 1904.
Charlize Theron was originally attached to play Gottlieb, but Paltrow has now signed on for the role, according to Variety.
The film, The Danish Girl, will be produced by Kidman's own company, Blossom Films. It is based on the international best-seller of the same name by David Ebershoff.
Eimar was said to have discovered his true inclinations when he stood in for a female model who was due to pose for one of Gottlieb's paintings, dressing in women's clothes and make-up.
He became a regular model for Gottlieb, which scandalised Copenhagen society when the secret came out. The couple moved to the more liberal-minded Paris, where Wegener adopted the alter ego of Lili Elbe.
Wegener and Gottlieb maintained their unconventional marriage until 1929, when Wegener embarked upon a series of sex change operations. The marriage was annulled - as both were now women, the King of Denmark declared it invalid - and Gottlieb went on to wed an Italian diplomat.
In 1931, Wegener died after undergoing a final operation which she hoped would enable her to have children.

There is no role too low for the Hollyweird to play.
What a “Puke-O-Rama!” cough, cough HURL!
Hollywood and its self serving movies....Barf pizza!
A crappy movie that will bomb at the box office and receive all the awards from Hollyweird.
Is it just me,or does the one on the right look like Ronald McDonald?
pronoun abuse...haha..that’s great! I just finished several pages of pronoun review with my homeschooled son and I do believe you are right ;)
Every example I cited except perhaps Percy (which I think was just about a penis transplant, not transexual surgery) was created deliberately AS an exploitation film. Now Hollyweird pretends that it’s being “sensitive”. It’s still about selling tickets and making money.
Maybe Nicole Kidman needs a project that'll lose money for tax purposes. The Beatles made Help! because they needed to spend less time in England as a tax dodge.
Maybe it's a Springtime For Hitler investment project. Who knows.
I rate movies by the number of explosions, and the number of scantily clad women. Plot is a bonus.
I won't be seeing this flick.
I think Gwynneth Paltrow is better suited to play the man (I saw her topless in that Young Shakespeare movie...)
I'd sure like to know what this surgery entailed. Building a uterus out of scrap apparently isn't easy.
I spent three loooooong classes in HS Civics watching that piece of crap. My teacher was trying to make a point, or something.
All she accomplished was to provide comic fodder for a bunch of not-so-sexually-liberated teenaged guys.
Good post. I'd forgotten all about that junk.
CANDICE Who are you to judge my womanly soul? The Goddess flames that burn in my memory aren't dark. Dare you call them dark! Here lies the Goddess truth of my body.
CANDICE The Goddess that cries, "Freedom!" Here is the Goddess truth of my womanly being You are my blossom, my flame. When we make love, it's like the sun is right outside the door.
HER BLOSSOM Then make love to me, right now.
Blech!
I think Chaz Bono looks like janet Napolitano now. And Kevin James
Isn’t that Zero’s mother on the right? ;-)
