Winston S. Churchill, The Gathering Storm
Thank you, fascinating stuff - especially poignant is the gathering storm over Finland.
OMG!! Luigi Barzini, Jr!! I just wonder if...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilio_Barzini
Barzini presides as head of one of New York’s Five Families, and wields power matched only by Vito Corleone. He has interests in markets such as narcotics, gambling and prostitution, and is also interested in Las Vegas and Nevada. Unlike Corleone, he is not considered a “Mustache Pete” and is greatly respected by younger Mafia leaders.

US allows “cash and carry” arms sales
Saturday, November 4, 1939 www.onwar.com
In Washington... A modification of the neutrality legislation passes into law. Although by its terms the ban on American ships and civilians in clearly defined war zones is confirmed, it does provide for supply of arms to belligerents on a “cash and carry” basis. Such arms must be ordered from private companies, paid for up front and transported to the war zone in the in ships provided by the purchaser. British naval strength means that, as is intended, only the Allies will benefit from this. Within a few days both the British and the French establish purchasing missions in Washington.
In Oslo... The British naval attache in Norway receives an anonymous (by a “German scientist who wishes you well”) report revealing secrets of German long-range rockets and radar — the “Oslo Report.” A prototype proximity mine fuse is also left on the windowsill, with the report.
In Britain... Rear-Admiral Hugh Sinclair, head (”C”) of British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), dies of cancer. He is succeeded by his deputy, Colonel Stewart Menzies.

The Oslo Report was one of the most spectacular leaks in the history of military intelligence. Written by Hans Ferdinand Mayer on November 1,2, 1939 during a business trip to Oslo, Norway, it described several German weapons systems, current and future. Mayer mailed the report anonymously in the form of two letters to the British Embassy in Oslo, where they were passed on to MI6 in London for further analysis, and proved to be an invaluable resource to the British in developing counter-measures, especially to navigational and targeting radars, and contributed to the British winning the Battle of Britain.
Tomorrow's lead story.
Jews in Sudetenland Deported to Poland
...Most of them are evidently headed for labor camps in the interior of Poland.
What labor camps? At this point the only camp in Poland that is open as far as I know is Stutthof which was opened on September 2 right after the invasion. Stutthof had about one of the most obscene war crime imaginable take place in it by Rudolf Spanner who owned a soap factory in nearby Danzig and in 1940 started turning prisoners from Stutthof into soap.
Does anyone have a link on any open labor camp in Poland that these people are going to or is this still a case where they are being brought to Poland and then chased across into the Soviet frontier which was also happening at this time.
This may provide a partial answer to your question.

The Jews of Moravska Ostrava and Fr(?)dek - Mistek were the first on Czech territory to feel it. On October 18 and 27, 1939, two Jewish transports left with 1 292 men for the railway station Nisko on the river San in the eastern part of Lublinsk in occupied Poland. Within the framework of the preparation for the so - called “restratification” of Jews they together with the men in the transports from Vienna and Katovice were to build a camp which according to the original concept was to become a base for organizing a “Jewish reservation” or “Reichs ghetto” towards which the deportation transports from Poland, Austria, Germany and the Czech lands were to stream. To the world, these deportations were presented as a magnificent gesture from the Germans to give a place of “asylum” to the Jews in Eastern Europe and even to establish a “Jewish state under German rule”. In reality, the forced concentration of such huge masses of impoverished people in this region, which was absolutely unprepared to absorb them, meant a sentence of death from hunger, cold and epidemics. Literally, it was “Vernichtung durch Aussiedlung” - annihilation through evacuation.
"Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." -- Winston Churchill
Further to the Note on the conversation between SS Hauptsturmbannfuehrer Eichmann, Dr. Ebner of the Gestapo and the Special Representative of Reichskommissar Dr. Becker, it is stated that the Resettlement operation to Poland will begin at 22.00 hours on October 20, 1939, with the first transport of 1,000 Jews fit for work, from the Aspang Rail Station in Vienna. The Jews were supplied by the Jewish Community with tools for the erection of a barracks village at Nisko, where transports of Jews fit for work have already been sent from Maehrisch-Ostrau. The Jews on the transport will also be given foodstuffs for 4 weeks.
Further transports will leave regularly on Tuesdays and Fridays of each week with 1,000 Jews. The second and third transports will consist of Jews and Jewesses at present under arrest in Vienna, whose departure date has been set by the Gestapo. From the fourth transport on, complete families will already be sent.
When the barracks village at Nisko has been completed, the Jews who arrived with the first transport will in continuous progression be distributed to the interior to the formerly Jewish villages in that area.
The composition of the transports is arranged by the Jewish Community of Vienna (as long as this remains possible) and a Jewish transport management is responsible for the transports. In addition, each transport is accompanied by 25 police (Schupo) officers under the command of a police captain, who must prevent all danger of escape by use of arms.

* Report by the Central Office for Jewish Emigration, October 18, 1939.
Eichmann found that this was not possible to implement. Here's an excerpt from "German-Jewish History in Modern Times: Renewal and Destruction, 1918-1945" by Avraham Barkai
After several weeks it turned out that the "settlement plan" concocted by Eichmann and his superiors had run into opposition and could not be implemented. Only some five hundred men remained in the barracks camp in Nisko. Later, together with the Gemeinde officials that had been order to Nisko, they were allowed to return to their home towns. The majority of the expellees were driven by the SS across the demarcation line and taken in by the Jewish communities in the territory annexed by the Soviets.
I wonder if these Sudeten Jews are part of the original 2000 send to Nisko. Otherwise I cant imagine where they went.
But I didn’t know until this day that it was Barzini all along.
Mussolini's a pimp.
Women and children can afford to be careless, but not men.
Is that the Menzies who will advance the career of one Harold ‘Kim’ Philby?
