As I watch the World Series this year, I am reminded, once again, how I miss the poetic voice of VIN SKULLY. His lyrical narrative in describing the game was very inspiring and went far beyond the sport he was observing. A talented broadcaster with a Word Paintbrush. For those who remember, here are just a few more quotes he was known for.
(Please click Link for a just a brief reminder of his talent).
Meaning not to be rude bnut his name is spelled Scully. I have been listening to him since 1960.
Meaning not to be rude but his name is spelled Scully. I have been listening to him since 1960.
I do believe it’s “Scully”. Not to be confused with the “skull”.. Chertoff.
Joe Buck does nothing for me .
Sorry, my BIG mistake: Scully.
My apologies to Vin and family.
Wasn’t the World Series last month...guess I missed it who won and more importantly who cares?
I could not agree more.
Vin Scully - good, but he’s no Mel Allen.
Thanks for the post. Enjoyed the transcript of Koufax’s perfect game. Don’t watch a ton of baseball - a pipe smoker’s game, IMO, for it’s pace - but have followed it enough to understand your zeal for Scully’s live commentary.
Listen to Jon Miller and Joe Morgan on ESPN radio as an alternative to Buck and Tim “a legend in his own mind” McCarver.
As is Chick Hearn....
Joe Buck is an a-hole. I learned a lot about baseball when McCarver was an announcer for the Mets; a lot I never new, like what happened during the lulls in the game. like how the infielders neeeded to know what pitch was coming. Cathcers run the game, which I awlays knew but not to the extent that Tim told us. Then he got a big head and wrote an unreadable book about baseball. He is now unwatchable.
Vince Scully and Jerry Dogget were a part or my life. I can still hear their voices.
“This is Chick Hearn at the mighty Forum tonight, with YOUR...Los Angeles Lakers”.”
“AIIIIRRR BAAAALLLL!”
Damn, those were the days.
When I wrote this post I think I had “K” on my mind...lol.
“So when he wrote his name in capital letters in the record books, that “K” stands out even more than the O-U-F-A-X.”
-Vin Scully, Sept. 9, 1965, at the end of one of Sandy Koufax’s perfect games.
Vin Scully (Dodgers), Chick Hearn (Lakers), Bob Miller (Kings hockey), Dick Enberg (Rams, Angels), Bill King (when the Raiders were in LA)
In a series with Tim McCarver as a commentator, I keep the sound muted!
The guy is the best play by play announcer in the game.
Hands down!!
Enberg always classy.....
