The Hill

I remember, long ago, when all was up from me,
My eyes grew tired of looking up, my feet from being raised,
And plodding forward, step by step, in search of being praised.

The grown-ups were so tall back then, and my ambition small,
They were around me constantly, to lift me when I’d fall,
And set me back upon my path, my stumbling mimicry,

Of what I saw around me in the valley of my youth,
So slowly did I climb my way onto a higher plane,
Where things seemed slightly evener, though harder to explain.

My legs grown longer, now I had to lengthen out my mind,
Encompassing dimensions that I never thought I’d find,
I hardly noticed when the challenge changed, in truth.

Till I was looking ‘round upon a plane of endless wonder,
And stretching out my hand to hold it tight,
Aware somehow that there was something they called night.

A darkness that came falling like a snowflake or a leaf,
An idle drifting gentleness to dispense a gentle grief,
That left the summer colder, in embarrassment and blunder.

For long and long I strode about, while looking far and wide,
Absorbing all that came my way and more I went to find,
Stuffing up the pockets that I made inside my mind,

And treasuring the twigs and tatters that I filed,
In categories varied but with logic so compiled,
That every puzzle piece was fitted once inside.

With hesitance I note that things are changing once again,
The slope is getting steeper as I scan,
My area around me now that I’ve become a man,

But now the road behind me is the higher as I stride,
With a burgeoning momentum like a tide,
And landscapes rise to bar my gaze and ken,

Descending, yes descending, I can see that is the way,
Perhaps there will be rest when I arrive,
Reward perhaps that I was diligent to strive,

Or recognition that I served a purpose well,
Perhaps my story isn’t even mine to tell,
Except that it is all I have to say.

There will be another flyover tomorrow night at 5:08::40pm and Friday at 5:30::34. The times may vary a little bit down in your neck of the woods. The craft are separated and flying at the same speed a short distance apart (short from my perspective).

Can you see them with the naked eye?

Years ago we would go out every night to watch one of the satelites. I can’t remember which.

Thanks for that link. I’m going to save it.

Well, I did have my glasses on, but yes, they are really bright (from the sun's reflection). One might suspect them being high flying airplanes, but they move across the sky much faster than aircraft.

In tonight's pass-over from my vantage point, the path took them directly at the moon. I lost sight of them after they passed the moon. Once they no longer reflect the sun's light, they go dark. Saw it pass over last night as well, and I'll be out there again for the next two nights.

Confession And Thanksgiving
They have not served You . . . in the many good things that You gave them. —Nehemiah 9:35

During a Sunday worship service, our congregation said this prayer of confession in unison: “Gracious God, like many believers before us, we complain when things do not go our way. We want abundance of everything rather than what is sufficient to sustain us. We would rather be elsewhere than where we are at the moment. We would rather have the gifts You give to others than what You provide for us. We would rather have You serve us than serve You. Forgive our lack of gratitude for what You give.”

Abundance is no guarantee of gratefulness or thanksgiving. Prosperity may even turn our hearts away from the Lord.

When a group of Jewish exiles returned from Babylon with Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, they gathered to confess their sins and those of their fathers. They prayed: “Neither our kings nor our princes, our priests nor our fathers, have kept Your law . . . . For they have not served You in their kingdom, or in the many good things that You gave them, or in the large and rich land which You set before them, nor did they turn from their wicked works” (Neh. 9:34-35).

Confession is a powerful prelude to a prayer of thanks-giving. Obedience is the Amen.

Lord, before we come to ask Your blessing
On this special day we call Thanksgiving,
We would bow to You, our sins confessing,
Then we’ll lift our praise in grateful living. —Hess

Confession opens the door to thanksgiving.
