Snugs, your dad looks so good! I remember the pictures of him when he was in the hospital and shortly after he got to go ‘home’ - and what a change! (Love, good cookin’ and prayers do wonders, don’t they!)

Thank you so much for sharing with us. Hope the appointment went well!

Polly, I couldn’t find a good picture of how it looks when you take it off the grill!

We cooked our fish as soon as we caught them (and of course I had corn on the cob, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, tartar sauce and peach cobbler waiting - for the crew to get back with their catch!)

The Bird Feeder

I bought a bird feeder..
I hung it on my patio and filled
it lovingly with seed...
It was indeed a beautiful bird feeder.

Within a week we had hundreds of birds
taking advantage of the continuous flow
of free and easily accessible food.

But then the birds started
building nests in the boards
of the patio, above the table,
and next to the barbecue...

Then came the bird sh*t.
It was everywhere; on the patio tiles,
the chairs, the table ....
everywhere!

Then some of the birds
turned mean. They would
dive bomb me and try to
peck me even though I had
fed them out of my own
pocket.

And other birds were
boisterous and loud. They
sat on the feeder and
squawked and screamed at
all hours of the day and night
and demanded that I fill it
when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn’t even
sit on my own back porch
anymore. So I took down the
bird feeder and in three days
the birds were gone. I cleaned
up their mess and took down
the many nests they had built
all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like
it used to be ... quiet, serene
and no one demanding their
rights to a free meal...

Now let’s see .......
Obama, Politicians & our government
give out free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care, and free
education and allows anyone
born here to be an automatic
citizen.

Then the illegals came by
the millions. Suddenly
our taxes went up to pay for the
free services; subsidized housing,
5 or more families; you have to wait
6 hours to be seen by a doctor in an
emergency surgery because it is filled
with illegal non tax payers;
your child’s year 12 class is
behind other schools because
over half the class doesn’t speak
English, or want to.

Corn Flakes now come in a
bilingual box; I have to
‘press one’ to hear my bank
talk to me in English, and
people waving flags other
than the ‘Stars and Bars’ are
squawking and screaming
in the streets, demanding
more rights and free liberties.

Its just my opinion but:
maybe, just maybe,
it’s time for the government
to take down the damn bird feeder...
If you agree, pass it on; if not,
continue cleaning up the sh*t!

Pass it on!

Before I became the ‘cook’ for the ‘catch’, I would fish with the hubby and children. On one adventure, when my son was about five years old, we caught six trout. We put them in a bucket of water, to bring home and clean and put on ice for the next day.

We then, put them in water in the kitchen sink - for my husband to do the ‘dastardly deed’ of killing and cleaning them.

But, my little son came tugging at my shirt - “Mommy! Is daddy going to KILL those fish?” I answered him, by saying, “Well, yes, honey - but they won’t feel a thing. Daddy will do it quickly, and tomorrow we will cook them!”

Well, the screaming started, and the tears were pouring. Son was hysterical! “NOOOooooo!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!! Don’t kill those fish!!! They have NAMES!”

He had given each a name, and from that moment on - they were ‘pets’!

All six of them went into the plastic yard pool, and all the neighbor kids would come over each day to talk to the ‘cute little fishies’!

Of course, one by one, each one went to ‘fish heaven’, and we had to find another shoe box for the ‘funeral’. The whole neighborhood of children would be there, mourning the loss. Six times.

We never took him fishing again, until he was in Jr. high school.

Meg, When my parents died in 1994/1996 I decided I must do what ever it took to keep the extended family together of sisters/bil's and nieces, etc. Instead of the formal sitdown dinner, I created a Fall Harvest style Thanksgiving. Hubby went and brought in bales of hay, and my brother in law made a scarecrow. I put 6 huge tables on our lawn covered in red/white check gingham clothes, and we played " how-down" music.

It was such a hit that the cousins decided it must continue. It has for the past 13 years. This year will be our last. Physically I can't keep it up any longer.

I truly am going to miss the tradition.

We will have two large turkeys and two turkey breasts, along with dressing, yams, potatoes, the works!

OH that is some story Yorkie. I can just imagine that sweet conversation, and drama!!Betcha he remembers that well and it has made a great memory!

Thanks for sharing.

Our most favorite family outings on vacation was fishing!! We would get up around 5 am and go out on the boat, all 5 of us girls and dad! Mom stayed back. ( didn't blame her!)..we would fish until 11am and go in for lunch...rest and play around the cabin, only to go back in the late afternoon and fish until dusk.

Memories... Memories!

Me, too, Meg! Of course we didn’t live in an area where horses were permitted.

But, when I moved here, I used to feed “Fire” carrots every night, before dusk, for two years. I would whistle when I walked out the front door, and “Fire” would whinney! Then, I would walk the quarter mile to his enclosure, and he would be waiting. I would tell him he couldn’t have the carrot until he ‘kissed’ me - and he would throw his head way back, and show me all his teeth. Then, he would gently nudge my chin with his soft, fuzzy muzzle. Carrot time!

One day, I walked out my door and whistled. No sound from “Fire”. Again - I whistled....no sound. I walked to ‘our’ fence, and it was empty. They had taken him to another boarder.

I knew he would be looking for the ‘carrot lady’, and I missed him terribly. “Fire”, I hope you have found another person who loves you as much as I did.
