Jon Gosselin's epiphany: Reality TV not good for my kids
CNN ^ | 10/02/2009 | Alan Duke

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- After four years of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," Jon Gosselin said he's decided it's not healthy for his children to be on a reality show....

"The reason I don't think it's healthy for them is that we're going through a divorce right now, and I don't think it should be televised and I think my kids should be taken off the show," Gosselin told CNN's Larry King on Thursday night.

"They're 5 and 8 now; let them experience a normal childhood," he said.

His lawyer said the TLC reality series about the Gosselin family is dead because no judge would ever "subject the children to the show if the father believes it's detrimental."

Jon and Kate Gosselin announced their separation and divorce filing -- after 10 years of marriage -- on a special one-hour episode in June. They agreed to share custody of their 5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins.

"I had an epiphany one day," Gosselin told King. "I just looked in the mirror and I said, 'I don't want to be this person anymore.' I made mistakes. I know I messed up. I do regret a lot of things. But I have to learn from those mistakes and move forward." Watch Jon Gosselin talk with Larry King »

He blamed some of his mistakes on his not having a lawyer when he and his wife signed the show contract four years ago.

"He had no manager, he had no lawyer, he had no idea what he was signing," said Mark J. Heller, the lawyer recently hired by Jon Gosselin.

"Now I have a sense of empowerment," Gosselin said. "Before, I didn't have any representation. I take blame for not being an initiator. I was an avoider. I was passive."

I had to laugh when he mentioned his agent, from some “talent management. What talent? Having relations with his wife wich produced 6 kids from hyper-stimulation from her ovaries?

Without the show, what talent do either of them have?

re: They’re 5 and 8 now; let them experience a normal childhood

My wife has been a preschool director for over 30 years. She would tell him that eight for certain, and five most likely, the course of his children’s lives is set. She sees them starting at two-years-old and even then it’s very difficult to change the course of a child’s life. It’s much more a matter of changing the parents. She’s says the children in the five-year-old classes are about as mature as what she was seeing in the two-year-old and three-year-old classes 30 years ago. She attributes much of it TV and the fact that kids are parked in front of the TV at a very early age and the constant bombardment of their sight and hearing by the rapid pace of today’s shows makes it much more difficult for other things to get through to them. She will be the first to tell you she is by no means an expert on the subject and her opinion is that, her opinion, and not based on any sort of scientific study.

What she sees the biggest difference in now is the language skills of the two-year-olds. Half of each new class shows up having never had to ask for anything, just grunt or use some other means of communicating a need. They come from a setting where language is not important to them. She has to have a meeting with the new parents in those classes to make sure they understand the importance of having a child have to ask for things. Her favorite phrase, and she uses it on my frequently, is “Use your words.”

Kinda off topic I know, but it says a lot about the children of today.

I never watched the show. TV has become a wasteland. Only History Channel and Discovery Channel.

This “epiphany” comes on the heels of TLC’s Monday announcement that they are cutting Jon’s role on the weekly show. Up until that time he was happy to go along with the status quo. I think that TLC saw his ongoing antics with various women on various continents, I’m thinking of the French Riviera escapade, as a detriment to the program and they wanted to distance themselves from him. Neither one of these parents may be saints, but he seems to have gone out of his way to embarrass his soon to be ex-wife, his children and the network that has paid him a handsome salary.

I only heard this second hand but aren't they dropping his name from the show's title? I also heard somebody is giving her a talk show.

I watched a minute or two of the show and said to myself: “what is this” and snapped to my senses and changed the channel to BBC America and view: MI-5.

I too heard that they are dropping the "Jon" from the "plus eight" part of the title. I think that was part of the decision about the show that was announced on Monday. As far as the talk show goes, some TV types seem to think that a "mom" based talk show would be a good idea. Kate will probably do a pilot for it, but of course there's no guarantee that it will be picked up.

Guys, don’t think he is concerned with his kids...

He got his ‘epiphany’ when he received the letter the other day saying that “Jon and Kate plus 8” is now only “Kate plus 8”.

That’s right, this show isn’t good for his kids once HIS paycheck stopped.

Did you know that while TLC was changing the name of the show, they were still going to pay Jon the same amount and keep him under contract?

He was actually planning to try and get the kids off the show way before he knew about the name change of the show.

His visit to Larry King Live was announced way before TLC made their announcement.

The liberal media hates any father that tries to act like a father. Watch for more attacks on Jon in the coming weeks.

LMAO.

Gosselin’s apparent epiphany comes after TLC announced the new show’s name: Kate Plus 8. No more Jon.

What a fat loser.

Actually, as early as last year Jon was shown on the show saying that he no longer wanted to be filmed.

And TLC only changed the name of the show. Jon was still under contract and was still getting paid the same amount of money, and would still make appearances on the show. In essence, he was going to get paid very handsomely for far less screen time.

His visit to Larry King Live was announced long before TLC announced the name change of the show.

Jon Gosselin's epiphany: Reality TV not good for my kids

How about TV in general is not good for your kids, adults or for our nation as it promotes all kinds of anti-Western, anti-white, anti-family and anti-American BS..
