I used AVG and noticed the same thing. I switched to Avast! and problem solved. Been using the Avast! free version for over a year now and I am very satisfied.

EVERY anti-virus program will slow down your computer while it's scanning; it's impossible NOT to.
I turn off the automatic scanning, or set it to scan in the middle of the night.

I used AVG for a couple of years.
Recently, I switched to Avast! (free Home ed)
I like it better. It seems to use less system resources. Also, I have most of the background features shut off for better performance.

Even a "new" drive, in need a defragging, can operate slowly especially in disk-intensive operations such as virus checks.
You might want to at least check to see what your defrag status is ... ;-)
