You paid for your antivirus software? Why?
Good free options have been available for years, mainly from no-name companies. Nervous consumers figure theyre better off buying major brands, like Norton security software from Symantec Corp. Well, heres a major brand for you: Microsoft Corp.

No thanks. I want my antivirus software to notify me of Microsoft’s evil tricks.
OpenSuSE 11.1 user here.
AVG does make a version for Linux. You have to insert the Dazuko module to get resident scanning.
The neat thing is that in a dual boot situation, you can scan your Windows Partition from Linux.
Proof you don’t have to be a liberal to be ignorant.
This software is free. How is that racket exactly?
Oops, missed the /sarc tag. Sorry.
Avast! has the lowest footprint for active scans I’ve seen. I think it runs at lower disk priority than User during scans, unlike SAV which runs higher than User. Avast! also has many configuration options and features.
Thanks for the link. This may prove to be a better deal in the long run for Microsoft if over time it generates the perception that PCs are more virus resistant.
I used AVG for a couple of years.
Recently, I switched to Avast! (free Home ed)
I like it better. It seems to use less system resources. Also, I have most of the background features shut off for better performance.
No you don't, I have never paid for a program yet and I am the guy with the perfectly clean computer that steers my friends to free avast, free malwarebytes antimalware, free superantispyware, free windows defender, free glary utilities, free everything.
I mean, it's true I don't use AV. And it's true I have yet to get malware.
But should I boast about it? Of course not!!! That would be extremely rude and I refuse to do be so!!!!
Amen to Avast!
I did the very same thing for the very same reason.
I have had no infections whatsoever with Avast! and I recommend it highly, along with the Comodo firewall (also free.) A very effective combination in my experience. I never have trouble or worries.
We have been running VIPRE for some time now on a number of machines and it does seem to be one of the best and least obtrusive.
I have a free antivirus that came with my ISP, (Charter). It is called F-Secure. I have loaded and reloaded it and it fails to update itself. My MS virus software ‘monitor’ (Windows Security Center), keeps reporting problems with it. I also seem to be getting quite a few viri. Perhaps I should trash this and install the Microsoft program.
That’s what I use; only negative is that I might as well just leave the room at 5pm for the daily kickin.....my PC pretty much gets paralyzed.
Thanks for the ping.
Thanks for asking - I'll watch for t he answer with you...
Ask some of the people who replied to this thread before doing anything. I have SpySweeper, I pay $20/year.
