In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
popinjay \PAH-pin-jay\ noun
a strutting supercilious person
Example sentence:
Shopping was going fine until, in one of the boutiques, a popinjay of a sales clerk clearly snubbed us.
Did you know?
Popinjays and parrots are birds of a feather. "Popinjay," from the Middle French word "papegai," is the original name for a parrot in English. (The French word in turn came from the Arabic word for the bird, "babghā." "Parrot," which English speakers adopted later, probably comes from Middle French "perroquet.") In the days of Middle English, parrots were rare and exotic, and it was quite a compliment to be called a "popinjay" after such a beautiful bird. But by the 1500s, parrots had become more commonplace, and their gaudy plumage and vulgar mimicry helped "popinjay" develop the pejorative sense we use today.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Other than the fact it came on after something else I have had on the TV for background noise I have never watched oprah or the view. I have no interest whatsoever.
There are a few shows I actually enjoy watching, but if I miss any, it’s no big deal.
Radio reception in my house is rather poor and so if I’m doing cleaning or cooking I will turn the TV on just for background noise...........and noise is what it generally is because I don’t have cable and so just have the broadcast stations which cater to the lowest common denominator during the day. The first time hubby came home and found me sitting at the table in the front room with the TV on Jerry Springer I thought he was going to have a stroke. That show is so awful and so pathetic that all I do is roar laughing. To me it’s comedy.
I was only sitting there because I was taking a break waiting for a timer to go and that’s what had come on.
It is funny, in a VERY sick sort of way :)
And here, all this time, I always thought Jane was just an ignorant slut. I forgot she was also a bitch :^)
Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!
here, these people come at least once a year so it wouldn’t incite such interest but i imagine they are oddities there and so yeah, you’d think the local journalists would capitalize on it for their... “craft”.
stopped at the safeway on the way home to pick up some scrips, and they had free samples bc our safeway remodeled and just reopened and they are still “celebrating” that. crab dip, steamed spiced shrimp, clam chowder [fish theme today, i don’t know?] xsfrosh and i came home with some of this stuff since we were HUNGRY when we were in there. i got a salmon fillet to make for dinner and shrimp was 5.99/lb that i got to make for them. i don’t know how many points are in the crab dip but i got sucked into that one too!
my SIL informed me she made it to PAT ROBERTSON LEVEL, ROR!
I’m fixing Louis Kemp and pasta tonight.
To all the liberal popinjays who got zotted to death here: before engaging mouth, make sure brain is in gear.
Just came back from the Super Panda (perhaps the only Chinese buffet in the world that features pierogies). My fortune said:
“If you promise someone something, keep it.”
Is it just me, or is that ambiguous?
O’Reilly froths and fumes and spouts
A lot of nonsense comes right out.
He doesn’t have a lot to say,
That super silly-ous popinjay.
I say If you promise someone something, give it to them.
