Mackenzie Phillips: I Slept with My Own Father
People.com ^ | 09/22/2009 | People

"Don't hate my father," Mackenzie Phillips tells PEOPLE.

But in a tell-all book out Wednesday, the former childhood actress reveals that her dad, musician John Phillips of the '60s band the Mamas and the Papas, engaged with her in a long-term incestuous relationship.

Phillips, 49, who has survived drug addiction, arrests and divorce, writes in the book High on Arrival that she was already a star playing a boy-crazy teen on the TV sitcom One Day at a Time when her father had sex with her on the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979.

"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," writes Phillips, who was 19 and a heavy drug user at the time. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."

"My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father."

"Had this happened before? I didn't know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it."

Phillips' life began to spiral out of control. In 1980, she was fired from One Day at a Time because of her constant drug use. That same year, she went to rehab – with her father. Her sexual relationship with him had become consensual.

Dysfunctional is drinking too much and having a screaming match with dad during Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner...this is meta-pathological. But I agree with your sentiments...

And “Papa” ain’t around to defend himself.

The morning shows are calling this her shocking revelation.

I recall her talking about this not too long after her drug problems on Every Day and her 'dad' was alive then.

I think this is coming around again, only due to her now having a book (written by ?).

She should have taken that little tidbit of information to her grave. That’s vile.

Why? Should she have protected that creepy pervert father? I think she should have broadcast this before the creep died.

What a shock. Yet another family of liberal icons is corrupt to the core.

she could’ve said she got it on with bonnie franklin or schneider

I think that my fellow Fordham RAM Pat Harrington got it on with all three of the Romanos. At the same time. Chuck Norris was taking notes on his prowess:

Sad, if true. And more sadly, believable. But I question the wisdom in sharing that with the world.

I have read several articles about this and most seem to tell different stories. One says she was ‘raped,’ then another said she had a long-term consensual incestuous relatonship. They all seemed kind of muddled, and bizarre.

I don’t know what I think about people doing “tell-alls” like this. The man is dead, has been dead for years, doesn’t have any chance to refute what she is saying. IMO, long-time drug addicts aren’t the most trust-worthy people in the world and most will do whatever they can to pass off the blame for their failed lives.

If this is true, then I feel for her and hope she can turn her life around and find some peace at some point. But, I just don’t see the point in dragging someone through the mud who has no opportunity to defend themselves.

Actually, these are all boomers, born in the late 40’s or early 50’s.

Not a single one of the Mamas and Papas was a boomer, they were all from John McCains and Jane Fonda's, William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn's generation.

They were not boomers like Sarah Palin and Tom Cruise.

Papa John Phillips was not a boomer. He was born in 1935. The baby boomers are those born 1946-64.

Re read my post. I said he picked HER (McKenzie) mom at a barely legal age then dumped HER (McKenzie) mom for a barely legal Michelle.

"I just don’t understand peoples desire to publicly reveal their severely dysfunctional personal life, nor the apparent desire for many to listen to their sad narrative."

I can't explain the later, but the former is almost always entirely about money. I believe that this particular revelation is recounted in an upcoming book, and this is part of her "publicity" tour for the book.

"MacKenzie is the product of a previous marriage. John Phillips left her mother for Michelle."

Thanks for clearing that up. I was a little confused myself, after all, Michelle Phillips isn't that much older than MacKenzie Phillips - at least if appearances are an accurate indicator.

Totally believable. He may not have been a boomer, but he was in a lifestyle; well-off and constantly hungry for kicks.
Many of my contemporaries (born in the ‘70s) had parents like that. They’d do anything you put in front of them, justify anything, and their feeeeelings washed their sins away. No responsibility for anything. They were flattered to be called weird or kinky.
Some of them destroyed their kids in the process; others, just as bad, somehow produced respectable and sane kids.
But people can do unimaginable evil, no doubt about it. Frequently. It’s the folks who are shocked, that surprise me. The folks who think Mackenzie, or Jaycee Dugard or Elisabeth Fritzl or Stacy Peterson...or thousands of others...are just a handful of wildly unlucky women.
Bulletin: it’s happening in your city.

It’s properly called incest.

But “Daddy’s girl” takes on a whole new layer of meaning.

Gives you a whole new insight on much of the music from the ‘60’s. “If it feels good, do it.”

No telling how much mischief was done to the youth of America by the permissive attitudes of those days.
