Mary Travers, whose ringing, earnest vocals with the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary made songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” enduring anthems of the 1960s protest movement, died Wednesday night in Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She was 72 and had lived in Redding, Conn.

I saw them in Chicago in 1993. Didn’t want to go, friend drug me. Heard all the old songs but honestly just wasn’t feelin’ the (free) love. Left pretty creeped out.

Anyway, RIP Mary. You were a flaming liberal but at least you were honest about it.

I remember the Concert at the still unfinished Opera House in Sydney. I went there with my parents and older sister - I was part of a school choir backing group for some numbers.

Thanks Mary, and Bon Voyage, wherever you are going. No one can deny your talent, nor that your heart was in the right place, even if your judgment left something to be desired. Unlike many liberals, you did little actual harm, and quite a lot of actual good. I hope that I can match that in my life.
