Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.
Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

The Pancreas tolerates cancer fairly well. Thus, by the time the symptoms manifest, it is too late to take effective measures. This is why they are primarily focused on finding a means of early detection. If you catch this early enough, it is more survivable.

the mayo clinic website has some stories of a few people who beat the disease and have returned to full health. my mom was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor of the pancreas a bit over a month ago. her doctor said it was almost a miracle that they found it so early because it almost never causes any symptoms. mom was fortunate because her tumor was squashing the bile duct and caused jaundice. it also caused her to become diabetic. those two together rang alarm bells and enabled them to remove her tumor while it was still contained, and the cancer contained to the tumor. she had surgery two weeks ago and they found clear borders which means the edges of all tissue removed were cancer free. she will have to undergo chemo and radiation to be safe. the doctor did say that the current crop of chemo drugs do not seem to affect the cancer cells in a pancreas very well. it just is not very effective alone, radiation is the same way. so they almost always do a combo of surgery, chemo, and radiation when the situation is caught early enough. however, of the 20,000+/-cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed every year, only about 500 are caught early enough to even do surgery. it usually does not cause symptoms until stage 4 which is always deadly.

The article does go on about his earlier movies, including Red Dawn and The Outsiders. I grew up reading S.E. Hinton and also saw Red Dawn when it first came out in the theaters. So, that’s what I’ll remember about Swayze. I didn’t realize how old he was. He must’ve been in his 30’s when he was playing a teenager. He always came across as younger. But, 57 is far too young to die.
I just noticed, the article mentions another movie, Point Break. Not a bad movie, imho. It was fun seeing him play the bad guy for once. Keanu Reeves played the good guy.
Point Break is a true classic. Gary Buse was actually good in it.
I agree he was outstanding in N&S, but frankly he pretty much was excellent in everything he did; unlike many others he started out with in The Outsiders, he became his character and not Patrick Swayzee.... more than all that, though, he was a good son, brother and husband... and loved his life away from Hollywood...
That was a wonderful tribute. Great movie, great guy.

He lived quite a while with one of the deadliest cancers.
Gary Busey played a cop in POINT BREAK...
Keanu Reeves played an FBI agent in that film...He becomes a member of a surfer gang which commits bank robberies. Swayze is the charismatic head of that gang...
You are correct, he lived a long time. My neighbor was dead in 4 months. Pancriatic is a nasty one, not that any cancers are pleasant.

Ovarian cancer is like pancreatic only in that they are both often found late. As you correctly state, they are quite different in their progression.
Keeping vigilant IS a good idea...
