A two-fer question.
me

Posted on 09/12/2009 2:13:29 PM PDT by thescourged1

I figured since I had two questions, I'd combine them into one thread to make my referencing simpler and one less for everyone to look at. :)

How does one truly know if a site that sells heirloom seeds is REALLY selling heirloom seeds? That's my 'caveat emptor' question. Secondly, I'm needing a cleaning kit for my carbine, but the non-specialty stores seem to have just American standard caliber kits. IIRC, isn't .308 the same as 7.62mm in diameter?

Thanks for your help!

What sites have you looked at for heirloom seeds?

If it’s that site I hear ads for on the radio, that appeals to survivalists, skip it.

Google “heirloom seeds”. There are many reputable companies that have been selling heirloom seeds for years. For example:

http://www.sustainableseedco.com/

http://www.burpee.com/

You can look up varieties of heirloom seeds and see if they mesh but no, unless they are grown on a monitored plot, making sure they didn’t cross-pollinate with some other plant and are certified to be pure seed and the germination rate noted, you can’t be sure.

Large commercial companies that sell heirlooms would do that to assure purity. It is one thing to save your own seed and another to sell it with any sort of guarantee as to its purity.

Only just started looking, and it ocurred to me that since there has been increased demand for them, that the frauds will likely be out in force too. The first site I’ve seen was heirloomseeds.com

I purchased lots of seeds from Heirloom and so far what I have planted has germinated. But this is for the Fall garden, so will not know if they are strong to produce until later.

LoneGOPinCT is the expert to ask for your seed question, but I see he hasn’t posted in quite a while. Maybe he’s ‘a-lurkin. ;)

I worked for this comapny for seven of the happiest years of my life. They do nothing but heirloom, open-pollinated seed that you can save from season to season, if you use proper distances to prevent cross-polination, etc. IOW, you gotta follow the directions, LOL!

http://www.seedsavers.org

Order your garlic NOW if you want it. It goes fast.

I trust them completely, and would be happy to share with you some of my favorites if you’d like. For many years my farm garden was a test plot for their seed varieties.

For heirloom tomatoes and seeds, I can totally vouch for this wonderful place: http://heirloomtomatoplants.com/ I know Laurel and her heirloom tomato plants rock. We still have 10 going in our garden.
