Here is a video report about Maryland Prison officials who are struggling to prevent the illegal use of cell phones by prison inmates. More than 900 cell phones were confiscated from inmates last year.
Inmates have reportedly used smuggled cell phones to make extortion calls, and even order hits on witnesses.
NOTE: It makes you wonder just how prevalent this problem is around the country. . . . (VIDEO)

That’s what I was thinking too.
The fact is though that our prison system is grossly underfunded. Attempts to fix this are invariably always squished priority-wise by more “progressive” projects.

Calls aren’t the problem with cell phones (who wrote this article anyway?), it’s the ability to make a gun with them.
Sheesh.

Let ‘em have them. Then monitor what they are saying to whom and if they are doing something illegal prosecute them and add to their sentences.
Also make mention at their parole hearings that they can't follow the rules.
Who knows, might even be able to pick up some dirt on those they are calling and prosecute them too.
I think this has the potential of being a win-win situation for society!

This may sound stupid, but IMO, the Supreme Court should re-think their minimizing the use of the death penalty & give the states the authority to use it if you commit a crime while in prison. Locking up the worst of the worst just isn't good enough.

I suspect one of the biggest problems is how big a bite it takes out of phone company profits when inmates aren’t using the landlines provided.

Dont need jammers. Just start with copper screens on the windows to keep the bugs out and follow that up with some nifty tuned enclosed fencing on the roofs to keep them from jumping off. All improvements are justified for the comfort and safety for the inmates.

Yes. I would like the whole concept of prison to be re-thought. You know, historically, the idea of putting criminals behind bars for long periods of time is really quite new. And I don’t think it works. Some people just don’t function well in the midst of civilized society. Well, locking them up is ONE way to deal with them, but there are other ways too ...

Actually the video report does talk about calls being a problem, with inmates actually committing or planning crimes using the phone.

Some people either cannot, or refuse to be, rehabilitated. Put an end to the nonsense & get rid of them.

Actually the video report does talk about calls being a problem, with inmates actually committing or planning crimes using the phone. Why do we give these hardened criminals a bed, food, entertainment and free medical care, costing us millions a year, when it would just be cheaper to shoot them, and give the dollars for their health care to insure the uninsured? /sarc

Put a jammer in the prison triggered by any emissions inside the prison.
To: Federalist Patriot
It seems to me that the smarter move would be to obtain a warrant that would allow a blanket wiretap of all communications inside the prison.
Then put up their own cell tower and monitor / record all cell calls. Build up some cases and then start adding time to the prisoners and prosecuting repeat callers to the prisoner.
