Every Sunday for years I listen to the Big Broadcast 7 - 11pm est. Never thought to offer it to other Freepers.

The Big Broadcast runs popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s.

You mean Ed Walker? No. But I did just exchange an email with him about a program from last week.

When I was in high school (mid 1960s), I would listen to those radio broadcasts over the car radio.
IIRC, WLS-Chicago and a station out of New Orleans broadcast some of them, usually on Sunday evening.

My late father was in the business for almost fifty years. I have a soft spot for old-school, weekend evening broadcasts, playing the classics. Many a Saturday and Sunday night did I spend an old radio station as a kid.......the old vacuum tubes, honest-to-God turntables, long-throw A/B mic switches and pot knobs the size of meat pies, the old newsfeed teletype clattering in a closet somewhere. Analog, baby. There was an
atmosphere in the stations back then.

    Sounds like cherished memories.
Love Bing hamming it up. And the old commercials.

My mother has hundreds - if not thousands - of hours of the same programming from my father and his various compatriots, recorded over the years. Some has already been converted and burned to disc, but the bulk is still dangerously stored on magnetic reel-to-reel.
I'm glad you posted this thread and awoke a sense of urgency in me. I really have to put together a plan to salvage all those many decades of broadcasts, and convert them from analog tape to digital files. He was a very popular and respected man in our neck of the woods. In many ways, he was Rush before Rush was Rush (and I can say that with no worry to defend the historical record), and was practically drafted for hometown mayor for his views. I don't want to let that part of his legacy to disappear in silence.

If you can, listen to hear how the show ends with Eddie Cantor.

Yea, you gotta get on that. If any of it applys to the Big Broadcast, get it to Walker.

I think that last bit was real.
Underwood, from the newspapers, liked the upright image the show gave them. While in real life they were probably moving the country as far left as possible.

Tales from the Texas Rangers next...

Can you imagine...a TEACHER from MICHIGAN...is thanking NBC for the great coverage of the Republican National Convention...and NBC used it in an ad!
What a difference 55 years makes.

Would you be interested into making this a Sunday event?
If so, I’d like to be added to a ping list.
