An Italian tourist is facing up to 15 years in a Brazilian prison for kissing his eight-year-old daughter on a public beach.

The businessman, 48, who has not been named, was arrested following a complaint from an elderly Brazilian couple who thought he was overly affectionate towards his daughter.

Despite protests from the girl that her father had done nothing wrong, the man is being kept in custody.

If the Italian wasn't French kissing his daughter on the Brazilian beach then this is absurd.

That's kind of surprising since nothing is left to the imagination on Brazilian beaches.

You can be held up to three weeks in Brazil without being charged.

That has been the image.

Are we sure it wasn’t Marc Sanford and his newest girlfriend?

I remember when I was in Brazil in 1985, Christmas Day 1985 to be exact. That time in Brazil was transitional time between Military rule and an emerging democracy. I remember walking the streets of Curitiba and seeing a policeman armed with a Rexim-Favor submachine with the bayonet.

That doesn't surprise me.

I guess that Rexim-Favor is not the Portugese version of Por Favor. ;-)

It's not that unusual outside the US. I remember being in Rome airport in the 70's, looking up, and seeing a policeman with a submachinegun up on an overhead catwalk.

Public affection is pretty overt and tolerated in Brazil, but they are protective of children. There must be more to the story.

Bayonet is useful to stop attempts to grab your gun.

There must be more to the story.

Or it could be exactly what it appears to be. Judicial overreach.

I don’t know what they saw. One time last year, in Trader Joe’s, I saw a display of “affection” in public between a mother and her 8 or 9 year-old daughter that made my skin crawl and made me nauseous for days. It is possible that they saw something similarly disturbing.

Why is it your business to be watching public displays of a mother and her child?

To me this is the problem, eveyone want to notice anything they could notice.

This incident has piqued a memory:

Is not the Brazilian Marxist like lips and teeth with Daniel Ortega--

"Child molestation"?

Look at the "hero" of Nicaragua's revolution:

Testimony of Zoilamérica Narváez
against her adoptive father
Daniel Ortega Saavedra
