NEW YORK (AP) -- A 500-pound brass bell that sank to the ocean floor in a 1911 fire has been pulled out of the water off Coney Island.The 3-foot-by-3-foot bell sat on the pier during the amusement park's heyday. It was rung whenever passengers left or arrived by steamboat

Considering how filthy the water was, even back then, methinks they were packed cheek by jowl to avoid swallowing "Coney Island Whitefish."
Coney Island is basically where the refuse from the storm sewers in NYC ends up. Some cool Russian cafes on the boardwalk, however.

I would have loved to have gone there in 1910. I notice in your 1940 photo that the crowd does not seem very ethnically diverse.

My Grandpa would take me to Coney Island. He did not drive we would take busse’s and train’s from Yonkers into Brooklyn. I remember the fat lady laughing on the Boardwalk.
