She just celebrated her birthday a few months ago at a Manhattan dog hotel and spa, but now she's gone to an eternal retreat.
Chanel, a Long Island wire-haired dachshund regarded as the world's oldest dog, has died. She was 21 -- 147 in dog years.
The loveable pup, who made an appearance on the "Today" show in May, died Friday of natural causes at her home in Port Jefferson Station.
The Guinness Book of World Records named Chanel "the oldest dog" last spring when a 28-year-old beagle from Virginia died. Guinness officials helped the centenarian canine celebrate her 21st birthday in May.
Poor Kiki. She was dog-napped, apparently.
Chanel, whose stark white hair bore a striking contrast to her red fur of yesteryear, wore special protective glasses to shield her cataracts from the sun and a sweater to keep her warm. The daschund mix had a diet that would have her canine colleagues' stomachs growling in envy. No dog food for this pup. Chanel ate boiled chicken with whole-wheat pasta and a custom-designed soft treat that's easier for her elderly teeth to chew. In other dog news, someone kidnapped a sick poodle from its home in New Jersey.
The brown and white pup, named Kiki, ran away from its dog-sitter and allegedly got lifted by a man in a construction van, according to NJ.com.
A witness asked the man what he was doing with the dog, but the man said the dog belonged to him.
"He said he was retrieving his dog that just jumped out of his van," Detective Lt. James Sarnicki told NJ.com. "The dog's a 6-year-old poodle, and he's actually sickly. Why anyone would want to take him is beyond me, but these things happen."
How do they really know if its the oldest?
dogs have papers, unlike our president
Does oldest dog mean "Oldest living dog"? Because without that caveat, the story makes no sense.
RIP.
This makes me sad. :(
My white shepherd is 12 years old this year and I know her clock is ticking.
I’m going to go hug her now.
Helen Thomas is pretty old.
I once had a black Burmese cat who lived to 24. I don’t think that was a record, but it was astounding.
RIP Grumpy
I hear you. When I was growing up my parents had a white shepherd. They’re great dogs. She died last summer at the ripe old age of 15. I thought she was on borrowed time at 11, so it just goes to show that yours might have a few good years left in her.
and all dogs go to Heaven,
how many dog years is helen thomas?
There are no words that can fill the emptiness we feel with the loss of a precious companion pet. Their unconditional love and devotion are missed as much as their splendid and unique personality. But we can replace the grief with joyful anticipation and hope, if we understand that there is a plan for them. I sincerely believe there will be cold noses at the Pearly Gates. When I say this, I always get replies that our pets don’t have souls, so cant go to heaven. I turn that around and ask them, does the Bible mention there will be animals in paradise?, in which they say yes, the lion will lie down with the sheep, it says. If Paradise has animals, were they not created by God? And is it beyond Gods power to recreate your precious dog you had on earth? The companion he found for you in the first place?
LOL...the temporal context is pretty important. When I was first assigned to Ft. Riley, KS, I was driving across Kansas on I-70 and saw a billboard for the Greyhound Hall of Fame in Abilene that was promoting the "World's Fastest Greyhound."
When I got there, I found out he was stuffed and mounted.
I truly hope so. I miss my Sammy so much.
Someone told me that God knows how much we love our pets and he would want us to have that joy in heaven so they will be there for us.
I don’t know, but that would be icing on the cake.
21? My grandmother has a dog that is still kicking (barely) that is over 23.
God made us into his likeness, and in doing so also gave us the need for companionship with animals. Dogs fit that role the best out of all Gods creatures, and because of this I believe they also hold a special place in his heart as well. God knows how special your dog was to you, and when Jesus said he was preparing for each of us a home, you can bet he is not leaving out anything.
My dog is nearing 11 now and I know it will not be to long down the road when I face the heartbreak of having to say goodbye. But I also hold to the belief that God created him just for me in the first place, and can do it again.
she got proof?
I know what you mean, I have a 12 y/o Collie/St. Bernard mix, Bubba, that is mentally fading fast, I believe he is suffering from dementia and he has arthritis...it is so sad to watch him, he just looks so lost all the time. I don’t know what I am going to do without him, I call him my “old man” because he gives me unconditional love. Hubby is just “the gardener” ; )
Yeah, I was gonna say - I know of a 23 y o standard poodle myself.
