Frigid 2010 Forecast: How Cold will the Winter Weather Be?
Farmers Almanac ^

Posted on 08/31/2009 3:33:34 PM PDT by Lorianne

Old Man Winter doesn’t want to give up his frigid hold just yet, but his hold will mostly be in the middle of the country.

According to the 2010 Farmers’ Almanac, this winter will see more days of shivery conditions: a winter during which temperatures will average below normal for about three-quarters of the nation.

A large area of numbingly cold temperatures will predominate from roughly east of the Continental Divide to west of the Appalachians (see map). The coldest temperatures will be over the northern Great Lakes and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But acting almost like the bread of a sandwich, to this swath of unseasonable cold will be two regions with temperatures that will average closer to normal—theWest Coast and the East Coast.

Paging Mr. Al Gore
Mr. Al Gore please pick up the white courtesy telephone.

(FWIW we’re hitting high 40s overnight in central Indiana)

They show Kalifornia as mild and dry. I don’t mind the mild but I wish there was more wet in the forecast.

ah crap! That’s it, I’m putting in a wood burning stove. Heating bills were bad enough last winter.

Showing bitter cold and dry here in the midwest.

I don’t mind the snow but the cold can be rough.

I’m the opposite. I don’t mind the cold. But I hate the snow.

Texas - colder and wetter than normal.

To balance out the hotter and dryer summer we've had.

It all averages out.

Oh wow! Texas will be colder and wetter than normal. That is music to my ears and moisture to my parched land.

You wont regret it!

I’ve had a woodstove for 5 or 6 years and it has saved us a fortune.

The quality of the heat is really excellent, too. Especially during “wet” weather. My wife has RA and it makes a big difference to her.

It is a lot of work if you heat as much as we do. We live in central MD and try our best not to turn the oil on till December.

Anyway, I try to keep in shape, but at 46 hacking up the wood myself can wear on me. I recommend buying or renting a splitter. Save your body from some of the trauma.

Look out for Barry’s big Gubmint coming to put a catalytic converter on your stove some day, so they can charge you for “polluting”. I would not let Feds or insurance folk into my home for them to snoop around.

I bet that is just around the corner. They better not set foot on my property!

It was a mild summer, which means that the ground in interior North America doesn't have much retained heat. The coasts, OTOH, will benefit from the moderating influence of the oceans.

The oceans are cooler than normal, though, judging from the very mild hurricane season so far.

The remnant of Hurricane Jimena is scheduled to dump a bunch of rain on southern California and Arizona this weekend.

This is the first year I can remember when, here in Northern Illinois, we’ve had an entire week in the 60’s for daytime temps, 40’s-50’s for overnight, and without more than a day where the temps reached 90. And all this in August, often our dog days. And that entire week of cooler temps, along with the rain it brought all week, gave my wife and I some pretty tough colds to boot.
