I need to copy some DVDs of some lectures but have no software. What do you use? thanx
If your computer came with the read/write DVD drive then it most likely came with the necessary software you need. It will be either Roxio or Nero or some other utility but most likely nero or roxio. If you don’t have the drive then you need to buy it and it will or should come with the necessary copying software.
Same here, but I believe DVD Shrink isn't available for free any longer.
And do you want to edit them, too?
That is what I do as well. Lately I have been copying them to my server and using Apple TV to watch them. It is a beautiful thing!
Yep! And they actually integrate together nicely.
For example, when you use DVD Shrink to rip the disk, one of the options it prompts you with is to burn the resulting ISO image with DVD Decrypter immediately following the rip (assuming you have Decrypter installed).
DVD Shrink will start up DVD Decrypter and it will prompt you for a blank disk to burn the ISO.
For some it takes a bit of getting used to two programs to do one task, but it is really not that difficult for even the mildly tech savy.
Plus - they are free! :)
Just as fair warning, removing the copy protection on a work is an independent violation of the Copyright Act, separate and apart from the copying itself.
I take that back...it’s available again.
Could you please explain a bit *how* to copy a DVD's 'directory' or 'file' to one's computer? I would have no idea how to go about this. Where do you find a DVD's directory and/or file? Thanks.
Sometimes I give away free CD’s of my Christian music to people my husband works with or people they go to church with or what ever. And the sound quality that I get from the Roxio software that came preloaded on my computer, is as good as I get when I pay a company to produce my Country music CD’s for me.
I agree with CD Burner XP Pro to burn it for free. Nero became too bloated after version 6. I recommend ashampoo burning studio for paid DVD burning application.
I used to use DVD Shrink and DVD DeCrypt until it stopped working on some newer dual-layered releases that I rented from the store. I now use DVD-FAB and it works prefectly but it’s not free. It burns the dual-layered DVD’s too.
What is an “ISO”?
Yeah, I really appreciate having that PSA rubbed in my face when I’m watching a movie I PAID FOR.
Same here. Also, when I bought a refurbished iPod directly from Apple, I opened the box and the first thing I saw is a big sticker across the iPod saying, "DON'T STEAL MUSIC." I guess they have a pretty low opinion of their own customers. In hindsight, I'm surprised it didn't say "STOP STEALING MUSIC."
You can still find it if you look around hard enough. Just be careful! Some of those sites that want you to pay aren’t even affiliated with the original authors.
Not if you use it for personal use.
and of course you legally own the DVD.
It's out of the Bahamas (I think. From SlySoft) and I purchased the license a couple of years ago. I use it the same as you - to copy DVD's that my kids WILL destroy.
It’s a single file ‘image’ of an entire disk - such as a DVD, or even a CD-ROM.
DVD shrink has the option of creating an ISO of the disk for you. Or optionally you can just rip the disk down to it’s base files. It’s selectable.
For a full DVD, the ISO is typically about 4.7GB in size.
