BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies and the cheers gave way to jeers.
The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe.
Despite long-standing efforts to stamp out rampant bias, human rights advocates say Roma probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other people group on the continent.
Sometimes, it can be deadly: In neighboring Hungary, six Roma have been killed and several wounded in a recent series of apparently racially motivated attacks targeting small countryside villages predominantly settled by Gypsies.
"There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog," Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.

When I visited Italy a few years ago it was obvious the Italians, some of the nicest people in the world, viewed them as vermin. My direct, personal experience occurred on the metro while I was going to the Vatican. One of the vile little things made a move on me, I slapped down at it, jumped back, and yelled a large, loud NO!! All the Italians on the car cheered me, the Ugly American.
“Soros Foundation Romania” hummm....
A Soros agency advocating for human rights. This is rich. George Soros sold out fellow Jews to the Nazis.
Your moral superiority is showing!
It’s a way of life. Like homosexual.
“Many do not have official identification, which means they cannot get social benefits, are undereducated and struggle to find decent jobs.”
Tell them to come here and just get in line!
Have you lived in countries where there are gypsies? Have you ever been attacked by a band of children coming out of a Metro who tgry to take your watch and wallet? Stereotypes are wrong, but there is a basis for those stereotypes. Having lived in five countries a total of 13 years, I can understand why there is prejudice against gypsies.
They’re an ethnic group not a race.
No one is saying that all Roma are “gypsies” but there are packs of vagabonds who exist solely to take from society and move on to the next victims. There are incidents in America too.
“...waitstaff (including black waitstaff) are resistant to serving black groups because of the stereotype that blacks are cheap tippers...”
Everybody knows its true, knows there are exceptions, but it is to the point where waiters and waitresses will leave certain establishments if they become too Black. It is not based upon prejudice. It is based upon personal day to day experience.
Gypsies as a group are right down there with pirates in reputation and for good reason.
Man, you dont want to play blackjack with her at the table. She has the most talented fingers in the world, chip wise. lol
Otherwise, she was a perfectly decent type.
It can be difficult to get a job when your parents broke your legs so that you’d be more “pitiful” when your parents send you out to beg. And if you DON’T bring home money, you get even more harsh treatment.
There are eyes/cameras everywhere in the casinos in Vegas. Even the small off the road joints have customers remove their sunglasses when they enter.
America is the only place still using the bogus classification “caucasian” for white people.
I intercepted a Gypsy kid targeting my husband in Rome. She must have been 5 or 6 years old. What Gypsies do with their children (train them for crime) would be considered child abuse in this country.
> The Soros Foundation Romania? George is all over the
> planet, isnt he.
Except in Russia where the authorities have a warrant for his arrest for currency tampering.
Soros made untold billions selling the Rouble short when it fell from $0.17 to $0.03.
