BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies — and the cheers gave way to jeers.
The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe.
Despite long-standing efforts to stamp out rampant bias, human rights advocates say Roma probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other people group on the continent.
Sometimes, it can be deadly: In neighboring Hungary, six Roma have been killed and several wounded in a recent series of apparently racially motivated attacks targeting small countryside villages predominantly settled by Gypsies.
"There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog," Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.

Bingo. Same experience. And I have never been around any that wern't crooks. And that include a business frequented by these little basta**s.
Never could quite understand a group of people who live seemingly marginal lives, yet have EXTRAVAGANT funerals with Rolls Royce limos and all-but-gold coffins. There is a large cemetery in Linden, NJ popular with the gypsies, and traffic backs up considerably on Route 1 whenever they have a funeral.
Its rooted in junk science folks. Lets get rid of "caucasian" and use "white" or "European American" instead.

Every individual human being deserves to be judged on the basis of his or her own actions.
I reserve the right to judge groups of people based upon my experiences with each group.
I’m sure that many fine individuals of Gypsy heritage exist. However, my experience with Gypsies as members of a culture is that Gypsies are thieves and parasites. Anyone who has ever been to a train station in Europe knows it’s true.
Remember: facts are facts, whether we like them or not.

Cute girl. I’m sure she’s a fine person. There are fine people of every race and culture.
As a culture, Gypsies are parasites. No offense to your girlfriend, whom I’m sure does not partake of that culture — but the truth hurts.
This is not to say that any individual person should be oppressed or persecuted — but spare me that “all cultures are equal” crap. That idea went down the toilet years ago. All cultures are NOT equal. Like white trash culture or black ghetto culture, Gypsy culture is noxious to civilized life.
The reason civilized people don’t call Jews or Italians thieves or social nuisances is because to do so would fly in the face of reality as we all live it. Some Jews and Italians are thieves or social nuisances, but the vast majority aren’t, and there’s nothing in Jewish or Italian culture that is inimical to civilized life. The same cannot be said of Gypsy culture.
