What makes a "Conservative"
LanderTiger

Posted on 08/19/2009 3:14:17 PM PDT by landertiger

I have often questioned if under current societal and other definitions if I would qualify as a Conservative. I have considered myself a Conservative most of my life but the more I look at myself I am not sure if the label even fits anymore even taking into account the broad definition. Here are some stances on issues I take and would like to see feed back on where I would rank as a conservative...

1) Death Penalty - against it but in favor of life with no parole in capital cases

2)2nd Amendment - Applies to individuals not gov't sponsered militias

3)Pro Right to Work

4)Free Trade that benefits both partners (as opposed to what we have with China)

5) Pro - Life but would heavily regulate, not outlaw abortion

6) Strong national defense but would scale back deployments in Europe, Asia, etc (ie reduce or eliminate troops in Germany, Korea, Japan, etc...it's time they paid for their own defense)

7) Term limits for all offices including Supreme Court

8) Balanced budget Amendment with flat tax or National Sales Tax

9) Decriminalize most narcotics---regulate like alcohol and tobacco

10) End practice of withholding federal funding to force states to accept federal regulations

11) Common Sense conservation and mineral exploration in US not debilitating regulations and false Cap-Trade

12)Strong border security and deportation on all illegal aliens...end anchor baby practice

13) Tort reform and penalties for frivilous lawsuits

14) And the biggie--healthcare reform--I don't think the reform ideas are the panecea the left claims it will be but not completely convinced it is the intrinsic evil many on the right make it out to be. Health insurance reform that prevents companies from denying coverage to people that have paid in good faith and other measures are needed to rein in cost. I think that the idea of allwoing states to try out different measures as a lab to see what works best may be a solid course.

So am I a conservative a flaming liberal and don't realize it or a moderate?

I don’t see why these things would make you not a conservative.

You’re basically a libertarian with a couple of curveballs. Conservative enough for me.

There’s a test out there somewhere - It’s often posted here at Free Republic. You answer some questions - click here and there...

And it charts on a graph where you are politically.

I don’t have time to find it. But when you find it - take it. I’m sure you will see your results will ID you as libertarian.

I agree with everyone else, you are closer to a libertarian which is still better than a liberal/statist.

To me, moderates are fence sitters or finger to the wind types. They are pathetic as elected officials because they have zero core values. You never know which way they will vote and more times than not they vote with the majority for better or worse.

Give me a principled liberal, libertarian or Conservative any day over a “moderate.” At least I can respect them even if I disagree.

If you can coherently state your core values then you aint no flaming liberal.

You are mostly what we call a small-l libertarian. I am such a creature myself. We tend to side with conservatives on most issues. Most libertarians would prefer to see free market solutions to the health care problems of today.

Fun test...

Yup - I’m Libertarian alright

LIBERTARIANS support maximum liberty in both personal and

economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one

that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence.

Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose

government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate

diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.

That was the conclusion I was coming to. Guess I will just ‘caucus’ with the republicans and try to bring them around to my side :)

You disagree with Libertarians on 5,6,9 and 11, and are way far from them on question 12.

The libertarian party is for totally open borders and free immigration with out restraint except if the individual is known to be a terrorist or a disease carrier or a known criminal.

open borders are not so bad when there is no pot of government goodies at the end of the journey. A well armed libertarian society would also dispose of its own trash quite quickly. A libertarian society would also be disinclined to meddle in the affairs of other societies.

Piling fantasy upon fantasy is not reality. That is why libertarianism has never been a reality in human history.

Hundreds of millions, thousands of millions of the globes third world people would prefer to live in the advanced, world of America without any consideration of welfare or benefits, only the chance to pursue their normal work lives in this country as opposed to the nightmares and lack of infrastructure that they face in their homelands.

If coming and going was unrestricted and completely up to them then they would flock here, take advantage of our libertarian abandonment to do whatever they wanted from selling burgers to running legal drug and prostitution rings and then they could stay or go back home and build villas.

I have to assume that at some point hundreds of millions of those people would qualify to vote. Do people get to vote in the libertarian fairy tale world?

Absolutely agree. At least with a liberal, you know where they stand. Moderates almost scare me the most. If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything, after all. Also, they vote. And they're clueless. And there seems to be a lot of them. That's how the state run media can affect the outcome of an election so easily.
