Escapism ping.

“On reviewing 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) - It is all so well-intentioned, so genial and so gay that any reviewer who would look down his nose at the fun-making should be spanked and sent off, supperless, to bed.”

Quote from above and from imdb.com page on Frank S. Nugent. Go to the link at the next reply. Click on “Trivia.” And check out his screenwriting credits. Very impressive

This was the second time Garland worked with Bolger. The movie Pig Skin Parade introduced Garland. It’s about a small school “Texas State” which mistakenly gets scheduled to play Yale in a pre-season game. The song “Down with Everything” sung by the Yacht Club Boys is a raucus song which induces a young Leftie to throw a brick though a bank window. His incarceration allows a farm boy who can throw a watermellon 50 yds to attend the school and play quarterback using his name. That song should be Rush’s “Commie Update” theme.

She was young! She was innocent! She was the greatest piece of a** I've ever had, and I've had 'em all over the world! And then Johnny Fontane comes along ... with his olive oil voice and guinea charm…..

It's "so gay" that if you don't like it you "should be spanked".
Interesting.

Yes, and it was possible to say that because the Left had not declared exclusive ownership of certain words.

Innocence was assumed, too, in most cases, so “gay” and “spanked” would not raise eyebrows when put together in the same sentence.

The original Tin Man was Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett in 'The Beverly Hillbillies') but he had to leave the movie when he was hospitalized due to getting sick from the aluminum makeup. Jack Haley was brought in to replace Buddy and the makeup was changed to a paste. (Ironically, Buddy was originally cast as the Scarecrow but he quickly traded roles with Ray Bolger, who was supposed to be the Tin Man.)

And the phrase, “She’s just mad because a house fell on her sister.” was born.

Who in Hollywood in 1939 would have thought at the time that they were standing on the pinnacle of motion picture entertainment? The mountain top. That it would get no better than this. The multitude of stars that graced the pages of the fan magazines of that year forever immortalized.

This is to try out a possible new realtime feature. This is not from 1939. But still good.

I remember well my platter of the dreamy "Moonlight Serenade". On the flip side of the record was "Sunrise Serenade", as purty a tune as ever was written, also.

The one I posted in the previous reply (#18) is pretty nice, too. The video gives a sad glimpse of things to come.
