Three in four parents are risking their child's eyesight by exposing them to bright sun without appropriate protection, experts warn.

Nearly a third of parents in Britain do not buy their children sunglasses, a poll of 2,000 people for the College of Optometrists revealed.

Of those who do, nearly half put price before protection and only a quarter buy sunglasses from a trusted brand.

The College recommends choosing dark glasses with a CE mark for quality.

Squint !!! I don’t give my children sunglasses on typical sunny outdoor excursion but I might if they were going to be over water, sand, snow, or other sun multiplier.

My eyes stayed perfect to age 42 and now at 54 I only need readers. I never wore sunglasses except for driving and working as a lifeguard. As a lifeguard the motivation was for more coy scanning of female forms.

The bbc must be joking. The last time the sun shone here in Scotland, people ran screaming in panic because they didn’t know what it was. Although some still speak of it, that was long ago and that day is a great mysterious legend now.

The only ones I knew who wore sunglasses when I was growing up were Police Officers(and they were usually motorcycle cops)and Air Force pilots. Some of the kids I went to school with had a fad for a while in the mid 50s, they would wear sunglasses everywhere, even inside movie theaters, but that didn’t last. Most people, including adults, just didn’t wear them.

LOL yes they do! I actually have found, as I’ve gotten older, I like having them on. But, when I was a kid, I would never have been able to keep up with them, I was way too busy! :)

I do remember (in the late 60s maybe) those skinny slitty sunglasses, I can’t remember what they were called, but we all thought they were so cool. I never had any, tho. We were poor....

I think they’re coming back in style and are being called ‘kanye shades’ because a rapper named Kanye made them popular. Although, in general I think they’re referred to as ‘shutter shades’... not exactly sure if that’s what you’re talking about, though.

My eye doctor told me that the average age for women to be diagnosed with cataracts is 60.

I wear sunglasses invariably when I am out. I got the ones they advertise on TV, the ones that “sharpen” the view, and boy! Do they ever work well! They sure look ugly (on me), but the function is wonderful.

I went out and googled, those aren’t them, and I can’t find anything LIKE them. I know they existed. They were skinny and the wrapped around your head, but it was the plastic that wrapped around, not the shade part. They looked a little like the ones Levar wore in Star Trek. But, I can’t find them anywhere online, so I can’t show you what they looked like. Now it will bug me all day! LOL

Oh, I think I've seen those - they look sort of like a strip of film from an analog camera with a little notch cut in them for your nose? Somewhat like these?
