Harrold marks year of guns in schools

One year ago, David Thweatt made a decision so controversial and groundbreaking the story about it sped around the world.

The Harrold Independent School District superintendent made history last August when he and his school board decided to allow select teachers and staff members at the 110-student school to carry guns on campus — a first for Texas and the nation.

For Thweatt and his board, the decision was pure mathematics.

The school, which sits in the middle of a prairie 30 miles from Wichita Falls, was too far from law enforcement for police to come in time to fend off would-be attackers. The students and staff would be safer if on-site, trained staff members were equipped to handle a crisis at a moment’s notice, they decided.

Thweatt had already installed a $100,000 state-of-the-art security system in the school. Now, arming certain unnamed school staff members by allowing them to strap a firearm under their clothing was the final flourish.

In the year since that historic decision, a gun was never brandished or fired at the school. There were no problems, Thweatt said.

However, one week after school began, police busted a methamphetamine lab set up in an abandoned house that sat 50 feet from the school property.

Here are some inconvenient facts for our liberal friends, especially the part about the methamphetamine lab 50 feet away from the school.

In blatant violation of some "Drug-Free Schools Act," or something, I'm sure.

A second-amendment success story you'll NEVER hear in the state-run media.

However, let one kid bring a lime-green plastic water pistol to school and....

That is precisely why this part of the story does not ring true. Congress passed such an act a while back. It is prohibited by law, so how could there possibly be a meth lab that close to a school? I don't believe this part at all and even if it is true, it's Bush's fault.

Impossible. We keep getting told that there would be gun fights every day.

I don't care, if they had an armed cop on campus, they still can't be everywhere. No special situation is needed, and they ought to allow any faculty and staff carry as local law allows.

That by far is the single most refreshing piece of news I have read all day .. maybe all month.

Common sense WILL prevail when people stnad up for the values and beliefs they hold deep within.

Stand up and applaud this gentleman that has the deep seated belief, courage and temerity to do what so many of us are afraid to do. I’d take the man out to dinner and tell him to his face what a great American he is.

It must have been grandfathered in. I'm sure the local zoning office would have disapproved any new applications for a meth lab that close to a schoo.
