Photos of Snow Leopard Disc and Retail Packaging?
Saturday August 15, 2009 09:25 PM EST | by Eric Slivka

MacRumors has received a set of images claimed to be the retail packaging and disc for Apple's forthcoming Mac OS X Snow Leopard. If the images, which appear to depict the Portuguese version of Snow Leopard, are in fact authentic, it would mean that Snow Leopard discs are already in mass production.

"The world's most advanced operating system. Perfectly optimized."

Multiple sources claimed earlier this week that Build 10A432 had been designated "Golden Master", meaning that it was considered the final version to be sent to manufacturing for public release. Several sources have also claimed that Apple may be releasing Snow Leopard as early as Friday, August 28th, ahead of Apple's previously-announced September launch window.

> And the point of that post was what, exactly? (Other than to just be a jerk)

To elicit an annoyed response from you (and possibly ignite a flamewar). And it worked.

I recommend you reply with humor, or just ignore it (see #15 above).

Hi Swordmaker!

I'm not going to rush out and get Snow Leopard -- I'm typically not an early adopter, rather I like waiting until the first round of fixes shows up. That's truer for Microsoft (I waited years to switch from 2000 to XP), but it holds for Apple too. Nothing is perfect, even if the marketing department says so. ;-)

That said, it does look pretty cool.

My PPC MacMini was already converted to a metal install of Fedora 10 Linux, so I'm not worried about the back-incompatibility. And my older iMac etc. PPC boxes are retired now anyway...

I have an idea - how about I troll around random threads, I don't know- pick a topic - maybe Sarah Palin... doesn't matter... and I just post a random insult regarding Sarah. Particularly one that could be construed as sick, or implying something of a sexual nature, or maybe just insult her fans in general using similar terms. Let me do it regularly - and see how long it takes for a mod to warn me and/or give me the boot.

It is one thing to express an opinion that contributes in some way to the thread in general - comment on Apple's odd fascination with cats even. But just being rude - a sign of bigger problems.

Nah, man, that's humidity -- 80% RH out here, and 90+ degrees. That's just sweat... ;-)

Been there... Done that... got the T-shirt... couldn't keep it: sweat stains.

I think Apple will soon be in a position to mount a real challenge to Microsoft, not just in the niche markets, but for general purpose computing too.

Every time an Apple press release comes out someone writes this.

Sure, no argument there.

But I didn't take Petronski's comment personally -- truth to tell, I laughed when I read it. I assumed it was meant lightly, a funny and somewhat ribald comment on Apple fans' well-documented eagerness to grab any clue about up-and-coming products.

It could have been a lot worse -- just wait until the serious Apple-hating trolls show up. And (*sigh*) they probably will...

Now, about those cats... it's like most marketing that Apple does -- get a great idea and ride it until it becomes a trademark. Plain white boxes, that come in plain white packaging, with ads that use plain white backgrounds, for example. Actually an interesting side-thread might be "Why did Microsoft decide in 2006 to call their Small Business Server upgrade 'COUGAR'???" Talk about not having an original marketing idea... ;-)

Sorry about the off-topic post of that lingerie model. I don't know how that happened. ;-)

It wasn’t meant personally.

I can see getting excited about finally booting up Snow Leopard, but excitement over a glimpse at the box?

Please.

OK, so it was the first substantial comment. My little tactic of a single post pointing out and ridiculing their repetitive little "A H" "game" takes minimal effort -- and seems to be bearing fruit -- so far...

Gotta love the smell of singed moth wings... '-)

Well, I hope you guys get your rocks off on this one then. If it’s “perfectly optimized” you should never see another release.

Even if it RTM’d today, you won’t see it till September.

The first readable comment (one other already removed) is ad hominem...

My post is not ad hominem.

Here's a hint: making fun of "an Apple fanboi" is not ad hominem in itself. Saying someone specific IS "an Apple fanboi" would be.

[Disclaimer: I like Apple's products, but I am by no means an Apple (or any other) fanboy.]

I understand the fascination -- if you can't drool over the software yet, drool over the package.

Apple makes their package part of the product. They take a tremendous amount of care in the concept, design, and execution of their packaging. In that regard, it's no different from excitement about the shape and color of a new model of automobile -- something that has drawn huge excitement from car fans for decades. The car gets you from point A to point B, so who cares what the shape is or the color, right? All that matters is the engine and power train, and maybe a radio, right?

On the contrary, auto makers made the outside packaging of their transportation products so much a part of the car-buying experience that we take it for granted.

Apple does the same with their computers. It's not just another notebook or desktop -- it embodies design concepts that wrap the enclosure and the packaging into the buyer's experience of the product.

Now, it's not for everybody. Packaging matters to some people, not to others. Or a little of both: My daily commute car is a '99 white Subaru with rust spots, chosen for its 4WD and good gas mileage; I don't care what it looks like. But my fun car is my red '82 Mazda RX-7, which was purchased as much for the fact that it looked cool, as that it had a rotary engine and a lot of get-up-and-go.

Different strokes, etc.

Pick a Palin thread
and just say, "Aw, don't like her"
and you will be flayed,

your ancesters' graves
will get dug up and their bones
ground into powder,

and your dog or cat
will get served at the nearest
Chinese restaurant.

People can have fun
in a Mac thread because now
culture is so nuts

in comparison
that Steven is cuddly and
warm and fun loving!

Build 10A432 has already gone Gold Master and could see the light of retail day as early as August 28.

So far, I have found only a couple of minor "quirks" with Leopard, and they may be due to my own ignorance -- or to the fact that I don't stay up-to-the-minute on updates. (I'm on 10.5.6 -- and have several other ap upgrades in my "available upgrades" list.)

1) I'm unable to predict or pre-set the size and shape of new windows (most noticeably in Safari). [If I listen to Rush on WABC and size the window to fit, new windows seem to open at that reduced size.] I know -- probably "cockpit error" and you folks can tell me what I'm doing wrong...

2) Sometimes System Preferences seems to get in a mode where it is difficult to open a specific preference from the VIEW menu -- without opening a window with them all, and then choosing an icon. This is most noticeable when trying to open Network Preferences from the Airport pull-down menu. Quitting SysPrefs and restarting it seems to fix it...

Aside from those two minor gripes, Leopard is an absolute joy to use -- so I'll be in no big rush to move to Snow leopard...

So is it too early to ask instructions on how to install this new OS when it arrives?

"I'm posting from a Mac right now."

OK..

1) Click on the "Spotlight" magnifying glass.

2) Type "ad hominem" into the search field.

3) hold your cursor over the "Definition" field that appears.

4) Post the results here.
