What do you Freepers think of the S&W m&p 9mm?
I've been hearing some really good things, but a few people have had nothing but trouble. I'm inclined to think that any gun could potentially be a lemon, and that people are more likely to tell about a bad experience than a good one. Still, I want your opinions if you have one.
Thanks as always,
FA
I have one and i love mine. I went to get a glock and my hands are not strong enough for the action or to push up the button on the side.
This one, i can do it all in one motion, no sweat. i’ve had no issues with it and take it to shoot on the weekends to practice.
Never attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which starts with a number less than “4”......
Every police agency I know teaches their officers to continue firing until the threat is down. It doesn’t matter if they use 9mm or .45.
My instructor said use hollow points and the above argument is mute. So i hollow points. Somehow i think if you shoot someone in the face they are stopped. I'm just saying.
But, if the gunfight comes to you, any gun is better than no gun...
If you are unarmed, you are a victim waiting to happen. If you don’t know your weapon well enough to know that it will operate when you need it, I agree, you shouldn’t be carrying.
If you must have a plastic 9mm, buy a Glock. I personally prefer heftier steel guns, such as the Les Baer ThunderRanch in .45 ACP.
Just to toss another name in the hat: Take a look at the Magnum Research Baby Eagle.
It’s an Israeli weapon with a reasonable price tag. I got mine for ~$500, and you can get ‘em in steel or polymer.
I got a Springfield XD 9 mm. Love it.
“Is a police trade in going to be reliable?”
The short answer is yes, they are reliable. Police trade-ins are generally guns that have been carried much but shot little. There are usually some wear marks on the slide from the holster but they are just cosmetic. The nice thing about police guns is that they are maintained regularly by the department armorer so you know worn parts have been replaced and any updates taken care of.
AMEN!!! I am SO sick of hearing that B.S.!! I’ve been selling guns six days a week for thirteen years.A 147gr. h.p such as the win. silvertip or pmc starfire, etc, WILL put VERY large holes in whatever it hits.As you said,A WELL PLACED 9mm will do the job VERY efficiently.GRANTED it is not a .45, but damn near every country in the WORLD uses it as their standard sidearm caliber. That alone should tell them something.Ballistically speaking, a 9mm is superior to the .38 spl., but MOST consider the .38 perfectly fine for protection.
“The sigma was a blatant copy of the Glock”
Yep. Some call it the `Swock.’
“with a very bad trigger”
Again, yep, but it gets a little better every time I shoot it, or maybe I’m just getting used to it.
“They had to stop making them when S&W got sued for patent
infringement.”
I dunno about that. I bought a new S&W Sigma .40 recently, and they had new 9mms too.
It was half the cost of the Glock. Only striker-fired pistol I own, but I like it. Reliable, lightweight, 14 rounds ... but that trigger, it’s like squeezing a gas pump handle.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about the M&P models.
They’re not just washed-over SIGMAs (yech!).
Good triggers (unlike the amazingly shitty SIGMA triggers).
I like the grip interchangeability.
When I was buying another 9mm, I went with the Glock 19 because I’m familiar with Glocks and my rigs are Glock-centric.
That said, If I was divested from other firearms, I’d look at the M&P pistols very carefully.
Get a Sig Sauer, Glock 17 or Springfield Armory XDM (9 or 40). You cannot go wrong with any of these weapons.
They stopped making them because they SUCKED.
They resolved the patent issues and continued to make them.
However, S&W removed the “Sigma” name from the branding and just used letters and numbers. I know a few people that bought the re-washed Sigmas under the letters/numbers and they were sorely disappointed.
BS.
A 9mm is perfectly acceptable for a handgun cartridge.
No common semi-auto cartridge is going to guarantee one shot stops.
It’s all about SHOT PLACEMENT and the 9mm allows for faster follow up shots.
“Stopping Power” ?
“Knock Down” ?
Those terms are bullshit.
For 9mm, Im a big fan of the Beretta 92fs””
Ditto on the Beretta.
