What do you Freepers think of the S&W m&p 9mm?
I've been hearing some really good things, but a few people have had nothing but trouble. I'm inclined to think that any gun could potentially be a lemon, and that people are more likely to tell about a bad experience than a good one. Still, I want your opinions if you have one.
Thanks as always,
FA
Sorry guys, I accidently hit the % instead of the &.
SMITH AND WESSON M AND P 9mm
Do you mean the sigma? I own that, and I like it pretty well for my first handgun.
S&W has never been know for semi auto pistols. Go for a SIGARMS
If you live in MA, forget the S&W M&P line unless you intend to get a trigger job right off the bat. The MA-compliant triggers on M&Ps sucks. I’ve heard free-state M&Ps have much better triggers.
For 9mm, I’m a big fan of the Beretta 92fs
Any pistol is better than no pistol at all.
I think the Sigma is different. This one is from the “military and police” line.
Why buy the M&P when you can buy a tried and true weapon that is the standard for ruggedness and reliability? Buy a Glock, especially when you can buy police trade-ins for $300.
Smith makes a fine revolver, am skeptical about the autos. If you are a new gun user, I don’t recommend Glock, but go with something that has an external safety and hammer: Sig, Beretta, Taurus, etc.
Also, what is the purpose of said weapon? If you are looking for personal defense, get something bigger than a 9. Go with a .40 or a .45. If you want a revolver, get a .357. A 9mm is small and does not have real stopping power. You can get lighter loads in the other three that will have plenty of knockdown, but not that much knockback.
That said, find something that will be comfortable in YOUR hand and YOUR personal feelings.
Am always interested to hear how things work out, so Freepmail me when you make your decision.
I shot a buddy’s a few weeks back. Great grip. Accurate. He’s not had any trouble with his whatsoever.
Well, I think its &$#)ip(@^! !!!
“I think the Sigma is different. This one is from the military and police line.”
The sigma was a blatant copy of the Glock with a very bad trigger. They had to stop making them when S&W got sued for patent infringement.
Agree. Go with a Glock.
STOP
or
OH NO YOU DON"T
like a .45! just to make sure that there is no question that your safe.
Oh brother, not this again. So would you be willing to take a couple 9's to center mass to demonstrate its lack of stopping power?
A miss with a .45 is no more effective than a miss with 9mm. IMO training and practice are more important than caliber.
I have a S&W 40. No problems with it, it is accurate and rugged. It is a basic auto. If you plan on going to war, opt for better pistol. If you want home / personal protection, the S&W is fine.
Keep it clean!
Touche. You are correct about the misses and the training.
I know the Florida Highway Patrol is taught to double tap with the Beretta 92F because of the small caliber.
While a 9mm should stop someone if you hit center of mass, the way training will teach you, I still believe that a .45 will do the damage much better than a 9mm.
Btw, I have a 9mm, and I love it. I also have 3 .45’s and a .40.:)
Is a police trade in going to be reliable?
“A 9mm is small and does not have real stopping power.”
That may have been true for FMJ bullets, but not with modern expanding ammunition. Technology has greatly increased the stopping power of the 9.
I agree about the external safety. Doesn’t the Walther P99 have one?
As far as use goes: home defense, eventual CCW. I know it’s big. I’ve got a S&W 442 for CC.
