The short answer is yes, they are reliable. Police trade-ins are generally guns that have been carried much but shot little. There are usually some wear marks on the slide from the holster but they are just cosmetic. The nice thing about police guns is that they are maintained regularly by the department armorer so you know worn parts have been replaced and any updates taken care of.
